Summer: Skin & Suits

After spending some time in the beach towns of Wildwood, Cape May and Avalon, I have come to the conclusion that I have seen far too much flesh, tattoos, really bad clothes and way too many plumber butts!

But once I looked a little closer, there were a great many people who looked as though they were having a good time with some good choices in clothes. It seems the summer choice of garment is a little dress, usually in a bright color, over the bathing suit for a girl in the daytime, and little summery dresses at night. Guys are going for a T-shirt and bathing suits for the beach and boardwalk then button downs and khaki shorts at night. And both guys and girls are wearing flip-flops.

During the day, you see all kinds on the Boardwalk, and pretty much everyone is going for comfort. Maybe the economy has something to do with it, maybe it’s the heat, but everyone I see looks comfy in their own skin, err, clothes. One of my favorite places to shop in Wildwood is along the boardwalk. If I see something I like, hung up outside while going for a stroll, I just go in, do some bargaining and then buy it!

Mike Redmond, from Bucks County, packed all his faves (T-shirts, shorts and sandals) for a week at the beach. “I just want to relax and enjoy myself,” he says, which evidently tied into his wardrobe and seems to be the common sentiment.

The girls of Avalon sported little sassy headbands, oversize (faux?) designer glasses, short bold-patterned maxi dresses and flip-flops adorned with little jewels or baubles. The bag of choice was whatever is cute, looks good and carries the beach gear.

At night, I saw a lot of Capri pants on the ladies with slightly spangled tops in cotton or Lycra, or halter-tops and short-shorts—not the best look, but it works! After all, the Princeton and Jack’s packs everyone in with good bands and great DJs. My friend Lorien P says no heels in Avalon, you’ll break a foot that way! And she would know- a few years ago she did!

In Avalon, there are many cute boutiques. I like all of them, starting with Hoy’s 5 & 10, then a bathing suit at She be Surfin’, Island Persuit in Stone Harbor, and It’s all Good which all carry fun summery items at fabulous prices. Items from Kohl’s, Land’s End, Macy’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ed Hardy, Marshall’s and New York & Co also are favorites.

As I headed into the last days of vacation, I put on my navy-blue Ralph Lauren two-piece and my purple maxi dress to trek to the beach, rounded out with my ball cap paying homage to Jersey’s boy band, Bon Jovi. It was the perfect look to truly have fun in the sun!
