Andy Reid now gets to do one of the things he does best. When Brian Stewart left the Eagles to become defensive coordinator at the University of Houston it opened a void on the defensive coaching staff. There are two ways to fill it. Go out and hire someone with experience, or promote from within.

Eagles’ fans need to thank the Chicago Bears for having Jim Johnson for the past 10 years. Just after the 1998 season, Johnson was looking for work and had gotten a call from Andy Reid, who had just become the Eagles head coach to become his defensive coordinator. He was also in talks with his close friend Dave McGinnis, who was about to be named the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Johnson knew Reid and liked him, but he would have chosen McGinnis and the Bears over Reid and the Eagles.

By the end of the week the Eagles will have their full team at Lehigh University, for the first time in 14 years that will not include Brian Dawkins and for the first time in 10 years Jim Johnson. Replacing both the heart and the brains of the defense are just two of the questions the team must answer during their short stay in Bethlehem this summer before camp reconvenes at the NovaCare Complex. Here are a few more that need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

The Eagles flirtation with defensive tackle Hollis Thomas is as much about leadership and experience as it is about stopping the run. With Brian Dawkins in Denver and Jim Johnson's avalability still an unknown, a veteran such as Thomas who knows Johnson's defense as well as anyone, could be viewed more as an assistant coach than as a backup tackle

It might not be as tough replacing the man, as it is replacing the man who replaces the man. As an Eagles defense that finished last season ranked 3rd in the league in yards allowed and 4th in the league in points allowed continues without coordinator Jim Johnson, on an indefinite leave of absence, all eyes are on Sean McDermott. Johnson, who was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer near the end of last season, has not been with the team since its post-draft minicamp and it’s become less certain he will be there when training camp stats next month.
