I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change

Photo courtesy of Bristol Riverside TheatreAt last, a fast-paced show that sums up the trials and tribulations of relationships from the first date to a senior encounter in less than two hours. The romantic musical comedy is playing now at Bristol Riverside Theatre, and runs until Sunday, November 22nd.

While most performances require an actor to immerse him/herself into character for hours, this clever, comedy barely has time to catch its breath between scenes.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (ILYYPNC) ran for 4,500 performances off-Broadway and was translated into more than a dozen languages. The show was so popular with romantic couples, that it became a custom to ‘pop the question’ in public at the show.

Bristol Riverside Theatre’s talented cast consists of four characters simply called Man #1 (Kevin Duda), Woman #1 (Renee Rakelle), Man # 2 (Greg Mills), and Woman #2 (Christine Toy Johnson).

The first song “Cantata For A First Date” addresses everything in the relationship process that you have ever secretly thought about from the first date to the first year. Book and Lyrics by Joe DiPietro and Music by Jimmy Roberts are clever and honest. The music is a mix of pop, rock, country and other genres, and runs the full history of being hopelessly single, the cold feet of the wedding day, the baby stages, the in-laws, 30 years of marriage and even the widow/widower romance.

The cast interchanges characters and partners with an exhausting amount of energy and rapidity, and they are splendidly matched.

Greg Mills, Man # 2 plays roles from a child, to a dorky first date, to a father to a prison inmate to an old man and is brilliant as is the rest of the cast.

Susan Atkinson’s direction flows - or should we say sails - through this demanding plot smoothly and effectively.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change play at the Bristol Riverside Theatre, Bristol PA through November 22, 2009.
