Cliveden Winter Beer Festival in Germantown: A Preview

Photo Courtesy of Civeden of the National Trust‘Tis the season.  Flush away those pumpkin and cinnamon flavored treats, bring on the peppermint and gingerbread, and get into the holiday spirit.  Cliveden of the National Trust in Germantown is doing just that: kicking off December with their 2nd Annual Cliveden Winter Beer Festival, featuring seasonal and holiday-themed fare from some of the top microbreweries around the country.  If you’re not caught up in the craft brew craze that’s been sweeping the Delaware Valley, now’s as good a time as any to find out what you’ve been missing.

Tickets are $45 (if purchased in advance; $65 at the door), and include a 6 oz souvenir tasting glass and unlimited 2 oz samples from any exhibiting brewery.  A limited number of VIP tickets are available in advance for $65, and includes a special one hour private session inside the Cliveden Carriage House, where brewers will be pouring limited-edition Christmassy suds.  VIP admission also includes a meal ticket ($10 for general admission tickets), good for bratwurst, pulled pork, or any of the other beer-friendly menu items Cliveden is providing.

"The Winter Beer Festival is a recent addition to Cliveden's menu of lively programs offered throughout the year,” says David W. Young, Executive Director of the Cliveden National Trust.  “Who says history has to be dry?”

The list of breweries attending is impressive, and in addition to sampling some of the finest holiday beer from around the world, attendees will enjoy guest speakers sharing their vast knowledge of wintry beers.  Designated driver tickets are available for $10 and include all the amenities (besides tasting), so do the right thing, bring a friend and enjoy a safe ride home.

Want to know a bit more about the site? First, you need to know how the locals pronounce it: it’s “cliv-den.” Rhymes with “Liv” that “live.” Secondly, it’s known for the battle of Germantown when George Washington fought the British on October 4, 1777. And each year living historians re-enact the battle, complete with authentic historic uniforms and artillery. Want more info? Check out their website for the specifics.
