5 Reasons to Attend the West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival

We all love a free event, but there’s more to the 6th Annual West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival than enjoying some of the greatest live music known to man free of charge. It’s a place where your local favorites and international stars meet in one place. It’s a time where you’ll be proud to say you reside where the largest free outdoor jazz and arts festival takes place.  It’s an event where memories are made and dreams are fulfilled. From June 19-20, celebrate the first days of summer with a “funky good time.”
1. Entertainment in Your Own Backyard.  It’s a no brainer.  No matter where you reside, getting to the 7100-7400 blocks of Ogontz Avenue should be a breeze.  Don’t worry about being a victim on the TV Show “Parking Wars,” because the WOL Jazz and Arts Festival provides free shuttle service in areas like Bala Cynwyd, Center City and West Oak Lane.  The only sweat you’ll have to break is swaying to the grooves of Jefferey Osbourne.
2. Can You Dig It? Here’s your chance to pull out your sequence-embroidered bellbottoms and glass platforms high enough to stand face-to-face with Yao Ming. With this year’s 70s inspired theme, not only will you get to see first-class musicians like WAR and Average White Band from that funkadelic decade, but you can try your hand at 70's Name that Tune trivia and vie for victory at the best dressed 70’s outfit contest. Dy-no-mite!

3. You Won’t Leave Home Empty-Handed.  Whether it's a painting you’ve created in one of the festival’s many workshops or the revered work of a national artist, you’ll come home with a piece of art to place in that empty spot on your living room wall. You won’t leave with an empty stomach either. Fill your belly with an array of food from a plethora of vendors.  Take your pick from finger-licking good fried cuisine from the bottom of the sea and nutritious selections that will make a vegetarian go wild.  There will be giveaways for the adults and plenty balloons and face-painters to keep the kids smiling.

4. Good Vibes. It may be a bit cliché but it's true: Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love; and at the Festival you’ll for sure feel a sense of community as you make new friends and personally interact with the best musicians and artists from all over the country.  We think it’s that the smooth grooves call for a wholesome, mellow scene. How else will you be able to dance in the streets with men and women decorated in intricate body paint without even leaving the country? Come with your lawn chair or beach towel in tow.  It’s your family reunion times ten!

5. And it’s FREE. Some people paid an arm and a leg to see Teena Marie and The Whispers during her 2009 national tour, but here’s your chance to see R&B/Soul royalty free of charge. Get up, close and personal with Roy Ayers, The Intruders, Tower of Power and more.  The only thing you’ll have to worry about is finding a way to cope for the 360-or-so days before next year’s festival.
