QFest 09 Finishes with a Big Gay Closing Night Party

QFest In its 15th year, the Philadelphia QFest 09 closes Monday, July 20th on a high note. Formerly the Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, QFest 09 started on July 9th showing many of its films at the Ritz East and The Prince Music Theatre. The spirited festival runs both juried and audience award competitions, screening films that celebrate LGBT filmmaking from around the world.  This year’s audience favorites were just announced to fill the three empty TBA slots bringing the festival to its grand finale, The Big Gay Closing Night Party at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Monday night from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“We listen to you, our audience,” said Carol Coombes, Associate Artistic Director of QFest, “and fast off the starting block our first weekend were the high votes and positive feedback” for these fantastic TBA selections. “Catch them all again [with the filmmakers] on the evening of Monday July 20th at the Ritz East!”

Mayor Nutter at the Award CeremonyThe three films slated for the TBA slots are Out in Philly – Season 3, Make the Yuletide Gay and Shank. Out in Philly features shorts by the best queer filmmakers from the City of Brotherly Love. The screening will start at 7 p.m. at the Ritz East 1.

Directly following Out in Philly, Make the Yuletide Gay, a Christmas comedy about family and young gay love, starts at 9:15 p.m. The final TBA feature is Shank, where class struggle, gay romance and hot action collide in this amazing British film as the lives of Cal and Olivier intersect in a gritty, urban street drama. Shank’s encore screening will be shown at 9:30 p.m. at the Ritz East 2.

The 12-day run of 100-plus films finishes --quite literally-- on a high note at its closing party on the 33rd Floor of the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in the historic PSFS building. Tickets to the Big Gay Closing Night Party are $35 at the door (21+) and include three drink tickets per person. The theme for this year’s closing party is derived from The Big Gay Musical, screening at The Prince Music Theatre at 7 p.m. to kick-off the night’s festivities. A joint ticket to the film and party can be purchased for $45.

“Relentlessly upbeat and packed with delicious musical numbers, Casper Andreas and Fred M. Caruso’s The Big Gay Musical is a wonderfully big gay way to close out QFest 09,” writes Scott Cranin for the QFest 09 Program.

The Big Gay Musical directors Casper Andreas and Fred M. Caruso, along with cast members Daniel Robinson and Joey Dudding, will be in attendance for the Closing Night Screening of the World Premiering The Big Gay Musical.
