Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent

The Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent is hosting a set of musical events, analyzing the city’s vast music scene, while its main Museum Building is under renovation.

The double whammy event, Sounds of Philadelphia: Conversations On Jazz and Doo Wop with Bob Perkins and Jerry Blavat will take place at City Hall in the Conversation Room (room 201) with Bob Perkins on July 27 and Jerry Blavat on August 3. The event cost is only $5 to the public and free to Philadelphia History Museum members.

The first event, taking place on Tuesday, July 27, from 6-7:30pm will be hosted by local legend, Bob “BP with the GM” Perkins, a well-known Philadelphian broadcaster. Bob Perkins with the Good Music, triple decade music buff, will entertain you with his stories of jazz in the city.

"BP with the GM"BP has been a Jazz Host with WRTI, 90.1 FM for the past 19 years. He also spends time writing for different jazz columns and publications. BP can be heard Monday through Thursday from 6-9pm and Sunday from 10am-2pm.

BP will be accompanied by 26-year-old local jazz extraordinaire, Meg Clifton, at the PHM event. Meg performs regularly at Chris’ Jazz Café, noted as one of the 100 greatest jazz clubs in the world by DownBeat Magazine. With Meg’s fresh, sexy singing style and BP’s knowledge of past jazz luminaries and musical trends, this event is sure to knock your socks off.

On Tuesday, August 3, from 6-7:30pm at City Hall, DJ Jerry “Geator with the Heater” Blavat, will be hosting the second musical event. Blavat has been on the air for a whopping 50 years. His achievements have gotten him inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and he currently hosts a daily oldies show on WVLT, Cruisin’ 92.1 FM, and the weekly Geator’s R ‘n’ R R&B Express on WXPN, 88.5 FM

Blavat, bred in South Philly, has been around since the beginning of the doo wop days in 1960. Blavat has hand-picked a band to perform famous doo wop songs from the past at the event on August 3rd.

These are just a few of the events planned by the Philadelphia History Museum at Atwater Kent while its Main Building is under renovation. The museum, at 15 S. 7th St., is expected to be completed in early 2011.
