Abbott and Costello, Martin and Martin, Bush and Cheney--- All great comedy teams have one thing in common: names. Sometimes they are first names, sometimes they are last names. Actually, all my examples were last names. Crap. Uh, oh yeah, Bob and Ray!  There are too a famous comedy team. Google it, you ignorant comedy hick, while I tell you about Meg & Rob .

Meg & Rob are one of my favorite Philadelphia comedy teams and I’m not just saying that because they are big comic book fans and I am, at heart, a comic book guy . No, not that comic book guy, a guy who actually makes comics. How could I not like this sketch:

Meg Favreau  is a freelance writer. Amongst her credits is as a contributor to the comedy section of the Huffington Post. She is also a member of the improv group, the Real Housewives of Philadelphia  Rob Baniewicz is a filmmaker whose films have been featured in the Philadelphia and TromaDance Film Festivals. The two met while working for QVC  in 2006, so they must have a sense of humor. Fortunately, neither of them did this.

Meg & Rob performed when my improv group at the time was doing an improv night at Fergie’s. They both easily flowed from their scripted sketches to jumping right back on stage and doing improv. They’ve got talent and moxie. Oodles and scads of it. They put half an oodle and only four scads into this:

Nice. Someone’s been watching Yuengling commercials. The hipster comedy influence is definitely there. (Anyone that recommends Tom Goes to the Mayor on their website, is definitely a fan of that “meta” comedy school.) The duo proved their credentials by taking first-prize at something called Chip Chantry’s One-Man Show last summer. Here is their winning sketch. It’s very Tim & Eric.

Meg & Rob got shows coming up May 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th at 8pm at the Shubin Theater. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased through the PHIT Theater. This is all new material, so even if you’re a diehard M&R groupie with M&R tattoos, M&R action figures and surgery that makes you look like M&R, you’ll still see something new.

Tony DiGerolamo is a New Jersey screenwriter, novelist, comic book writer, game designer and actor.  He is best known for his work on The Simpsons and Bart Simpson comic books.  He has also been a joke writer for Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, a scriptwriter for Space Ghost: Coast to Coast  and a blogger for Comedy Central’s Indecision ’08 website.
