Philadelphia Summons Wizard World 2009

This Friday, Wizard World will descend upon Philadelphia, bringing with it a rogue gallery of legendary comic writers and artists, iconic science fiction and fantasy actors, toys galore, and even a little video game ass-kickery. The event is scheduled to last through the weekend (June 19-21). Three-day tickets cost $50 at the door, $45 if purchased in advance, while one-day tickets cost $30, $25 if bought early.

Wizard World ’09 promises to be a veritable cornucopia of nerd icons, with a bloated guest list that includes Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama, Battlestar Galactica), Kristanna Loken, (the T-X in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Ray Park (Darth Maul, Star Wars: Episode 1 and Snake Eyes, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra), and Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi, Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Not bad, right? Well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

From the comic book industry, artist Phil Jimenez, the man responsible for the famous Barack Obama/Spider-Man artwork, will be joined by a plethora of other well-knowns, including comic book writers Garth Ennis (The Boys, Crossed, and Back to Brooklyn), Jeff Katz (Booster Gold), and at least 90 more creative souls.

If that weren’t enough, this year’s Wizard World will play host to the Video Game Exposition. On Friday night there will be 2-on-2 Halo 3 tournaments, and then 4-on-4 matches on Saturday and Sunday. And if you’re not so much a fan of being "pwn’d" like a "n00b" in Halo, there will also be Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Bowling tournaments each night.

Suffice to say, Wizard World ’09 promises something for everyone. Let’s face it: in the wake of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and now Star Trek, it’s chic to be geek. So why try and fight it? Hit up the official Wizard World website: www.wizardworld.com  for a full list of guests and exhibitors, and get your registration on. Then put on your Jedi robes, ignite your lightsabers, show up, and high-five Philly2Philly correspondents some love all while letting your geek colors show. You won’t regret it.
