Vampire Diaries Episode 8: An Old Vamp Brings New Problems

"Bookmark

Prior to Thursday night's new Vampire Diaries  episode, Philly2Philly's Diane Cooney will recap the previous week's events. Feel free to join in, or debate, just keep it clean. That means no blood!!

Last week, Elena got grabbed by a masked man as she walked to her car Vampire Diaries photo: http://www.daemonstv.com/2010/09/29/the-vampire-diaries-memory-lane-season-2-episode-4/at the Lockwood estate. This week’s episode opens with her being delivered to a mysterious vampire who took a big bite out of the guy who brought her. I was surprised - I thought all vamps were into keeping a low profile

Back at the Gilbert residence (I just like the sound of that) Jeremy looks for Elena, and he runs into Stefan, telling him to give him a head’s up next time Elena sleeps over. Stefan goes into alert mode – after he tells Jeremy that he and Elena are still broken up. Isn’t it totally weird to be over 150 years old and talking to a 16 year-old about your girlfriend?

Caroline updates Damon on her conversation with Tyler. Damon is in full bad vamp mode – impatient, bossy, warning her that Tyler can’t know their secret. Tyler tries to talk to her throughout the day – and then end up having an altercation outside by one of the school buses. She almost breaks his arm – and then switches into cute girl mode saying, trying to brush off her inexplicable strength.

Elena is carried into a dilapidated old mansion – that reminded me of Bill Compton’s house when he first moved in – sorry – wrong show – and the vamp drops her on the sofa, and is about to take a bite when he’s stopped by a young woman. Elena tries to talk to her – but she pulls a Caroline, frankly – whining, and she doesn’t stop talking to the lady vamp knocks her back to the sofa unconscious. I was worried we were in for another neck snapping accident!

Damon and Stefan argue about how to find Elena – Damon realizes that Katherine’s desperate words last week apparently were true – and Stefan wants to go to the tomb to try and get her to explain.

At school, Stefan and Bonnie discuss how to find Elena – and Bonnie provides a super cool solution – she conjures up a tracking spell using some of Jeremy’s blood since they are related (technically cousins). It works, and the blood moves across the map in a creepy little puddle until it stops at a town three hours away. Two guesses who drive off to go safe her, let me give you a hint: hot and hotter.

The Salvatore brothers begin their Save Elena road trip listening to the Editors methinks –looks like it was the aptly named Blood.

Stefan tried to get Damon to talk about his love for Elena. Really? No good will come out of that conversation.

Bonnie and Jeremy are progressing - it won’t be long before they hook up. Bonnie is full of cool spells this week – she writes a note to Elena and then disapparates  it over to her. Her noses starts to bleed and she passes out, seriously freaking out poor Jeremy.

Rose explains to Elena that she and Trevor pissed off one of the old ones so they are using her to “negotiate themselves out of an old mess”. Rose also mentions the Salvatore brothers saying, a hundred years ago, my friend wanted to set me up with Stefan.” Apparently even back then, Stefan was the good boy.

Rose tells Elena that’s she’s a Petrova doppelganger. Rose tells her the moonstone binds the curse, “but in order to break the curse, you’re the one that has to die.” That actually doesn’t make a ton of sense to me – since I thought the sun and moon curse were super old Shamanistic magic. Trevor goes into more detail about how Rose had his back when he made a mistake and trusted Katherine.

Jeremy fusses over Bonnie who’s finally conscious. They have a heartfelt conversation where Bonnie shares that she doesn’t want anyone to know how limited she is with her magic. She tells Jeremy, “I’m all alone in this” and Jeremy tells her that he often feels alone too. Clearly the key theme for tonight.

Damon pulls out a bag of blood, sluping away like it was a Capri sun. He offers it to Stefan, in jest, but Stefan takes it – and drinks, then tells Damon that’s he’s been drinking a little human blood every day. And Damon, our dear sweet Damon, asks what Elena thinks of that, and Stefan says – deliberately being very casual – that he’s drinking her blood. Damon looks puzzled – clearly his face-saving mask for heartbroken. He managers to say, “How romantic” in an almost convincing mocking tone.

Trevor senses Elijah is on his way and he starts to panic, but Rose convinces him that she’s figured out a way to solve their problems – and he believes her because she’s “family”.

Elijah walks through the door – the cut of his hair and his suit tell us he’s suave and European. He comes over to Elena, takes a big whiff and determines that she is human.

Trevor offers a sincere apology to Elijiah, which he accepts before ripping his head off his shoulders (yuck). Rose frankly didn’t seem nearly upset enough – not for losing her friend of half a century.

Elena tells him that he needs her alive and needs the moonstone. He compels it out of her… and then the boys break in. Working together, they manager to outwit Elijah, and Damon stakes him to the door and leaves him there.

Damon saves the day, but Elena runs into Stefan’s arms. She does mouth a thank you to Damon – with warmth in her eyes that we haven’t seen directed toward him in ages.

At the Salvatore house, Damon’s pouring himself a drink, and Stefan tells him that they need to be united in order to protect Elena. Stefan then apologizes for turning Damon, he did it because he didn’t want to be alone.

Caroline and Tyler bond over some whiskey at her house – what is this, Mad Men? She tells him she’s the only vamp in town. I think we’re going to have a little intra supernatural romance develop. Tyler tells her, “I’m alone in this”. The writer’s were real subtle this week, huh?

Rose comes to the Salvatores, and tells Stefan that Lexie was the friend she knew. She is alone, but offers to help them fight the Originals – led by Klaus.

Damon is waiting for Elena and has her vervain necklance, before he gives it to her, he tells her, “I love you Elena, and because I love you, I can’t be selfish with you…I don’t deserve you but my brother does….God I wish you didn’t have to forget this but you do.” And a single tear rolled down as his eyes did the cool compel thing. So sad!

And Elijah? They should have taken his head off when they had the chance because he’s not dead.
