The 2011 Mummers Parade: A New Years Day Tradition of Wild Costumes, Partying, and Debauchery

"Bookmark

The 2011 Mummers Parade is underway in Philadelphia. Each year this yearly tradition (this is the 111th one) marks the day when blue collar men dress up in wild costumes. It's also a day of mummers paradepartying, fun, and (good) debauchery on the streets of downtown Philadelphia. There is no other day of the year when you can watch fat guys dressed up like Lady Gaga and dancing to Poker Face. It's truly a national treasure and it's all ours in the Philadelphia region! It's also the nation's oldest parade with roots dating back to the mid-17th century. Take that New York and Boston! We have you beat there!

With gorgeous weather this year unlike years past when New Years Day was frigid, it makes for a perfect day for the 2011 Mummers Parade.

Coverage can be found on PHL17 in the Philadelphia area. NBC 10's Steve Highsmith and Ron Goldwyn are on the broadcast. 93.3 WMMR's Pierre Robert also stopped in briefly to join the telecast. NBC10's Tim Furlong and other regular NBC10 reporters are on the street.

As far as the parade route goes - the parade started at Shunk and Broad Street at 9 A.M. with the first performers making the trek up to City Hall. The rest of the bands will follow at 12 to 13-minute intervals. And, a string band will appear at City Hall at around 2 P.M.

The Philadelphia Daily News has a really nice Mummer's Day 2011 parade route map and it can be viewed here.

Here is the order of the march for Mummer's Day Parade 2011.

Each year it's a challenge to pool together funds and resources for The Mummers Parade, so to support the effort go to http://www.savethemummers.com/ to help save the Mummers! Be sure to check out myphl17.com for photos of the Mummers.

The parade is expected to run 6 1/2 hours long this year. As of noon there is plenty of partying to do!
