Helene Eksterowicz's 'Bachelor' Episode 5 Recap: Tears in Vegas

During the fifth episode of the The Bachelor 15,’ Brad takes the 11 girls left to Sin City where he goes on one individual date, one group date and one 2 on 1 date (where one girl has be eliminated that night-talk about pressure!). The girls arrive and Brad greets them at Aria, one of Vegas’ newest casinos and hotels.  He whisks them off to their sky suite (which is really awesome!). As the girls get settled, Brad drops off the first date card for the one to one date.

The one on one date with Shawntel

The only one on one date goes to Shawntel, the funeral director from Chico, California. Their date starts off as Brad takes Shawntel for a shopping spree at one of the world’s nicest (and seems like priciest) malls. They seem to be having a blast going through designer top end stores such as Fendi, Prada, etc. Shawntel ends up getting a $5000 purse and a Fendi dress for her dinner rooftop date with him later.

When Shawntel returns to the suite with all of her bags, the claws come out and the girls get very jealous. No surprise there! Michelle even offers up that she thinks Brad’s date with Shawntel could be the worst date that he’s every had, which is kind of harsh, even for Michelle. Anyway, Shawntel spruces up with her designer digs and she and Brad share an intimate rooftop dinner together. And the topic of conversation….embalming and vein draining! Not very romantic if you ask me, but whatever.

Seriously, I have no idea how Brad could eat his dinner during that chat. Brad’s commentary is very comical as he laughs about their conversation during his interview. After the date, they take in a fireworks display just for them and he kisses her while in his arms. Overall, I think he is very attracted and comfortable around Shawntel, but not sure if her occupation would be a good fit for him.

Vegas Baby, Vegas!

Next up is the group race car driving date at the Las Vegas Speedway. 'The Bachelor' photo courtesy of ABC.The girls seem very excited to race cars in front of Brad. All except for Emily, whose late fiancé was a race car driver. During the racing, Britt is nervous, Michele just wants to look hot in the car, Chantal puts the pedal to the metal, and Emily is very somber.

Brad takes Emily aside and Emily says that she is excited to be there, but wants to move on from the Nascar world. She further explains why she is upset and Brad seems very sensitive and sympathetic. He notes that they all can leave if she seems uncomfortable there, which is actually very sweet.

When it’s her turn, Emily ends up crying in the car and Brad consoles her. She says that she ready to move on and find love again and speeds her way around the track. After the racing, Brad takes them to a nighttime pool party and immediately takes Emily aside again to talk to her. Emily explains that it was very therapeutic for her to do it and she’s glad that she did it with a great guy such as Brad. Brad seems kinda somber during this conversation and notes that its a hard space for any man to fill (meaning her fiancé’s shoes). I think Brad is very smitten with Emily but is trying to figure out if she can fall in love with him and give herself fully to him. I can see some apprehension now on his part.

Then during his talks with the other girls, Alli is crying and then Chantal is crying to him. Chantal accidentally says that she loves (later says likes) him more after see how caring he was with Emily. Brad seems to be taken back by seeing all the girls get very emotional. When Michelle (sort of) breaks the ice and asks to talk to him, he seems relieved! Michelle tells Brad that she thinks that he is a “man babysitting a bunch of girls.” After they make out for while, Brad says that he feels a true connection to Michelle (although I think it’s more of a sexual connection).

For the last date, both Ashley’s have to go on the 2 on 1 date. They are both crying and initially upset because they are close, but one will need to go home. Brad ends up taking them to a ‘Viva ELVIS Cirque du Soleil’ show where the creative director comes out to tell them that they will be learning some moves and will appear in that night’s performance. However, only one girl will be perform with Brad, so he has to let one girl go after having dinner with them. After dinner, Brad expresses to Ashley S. that she’ll make a great wife, but not for him, so he lets her go and walks her out.

I thought Brad’s elaborative statements seemed kind of much for this situation (especially in front of the other Ashley). Moreover, Ashley S. seems very upset afterwards during her interview. The girls back at the suite are shocked when they take away Ashley S’ bags, and I think even Ashley H. was shocked as well that Brad picked her. After all the drama surrounding her previous emotional group date with Brad, I was pretty shocked too.

Therapist Time

Before the rose ceremony, Brad expresses concern with the girls getting very emotionally involved (you think?), Emily and Brad from 'The Bachelor.' Photo: zap2it.comand he calls his therapist Jamie to discuss it. He notes that his original instinct would be to detract, but the therapist tells him to allow himself to be vulnerable, and that there is strength in that. Later at the rose ceremony cocktail party, Chantal is tearful and admits to Brad that she and the other girls felt like they were on his personal date with Emily on the group date. Brad explains to Chantal that he wanted to comfort Emily, and that he would have done that for anyone of them.

I think Brad downplayed how he feels for Emily in front of Chantal. This was possibly done to spare her feelings so she doesn’t start to detract from him. Brad later opens up a private champagne bottle for he and Alli. He then takes Britt aside to confide in her that he feels some chemistry between them. Michelle later takes Brad aside saying that she doesn’t feel the other girls can appreciate him. She practically starts seducing him by kissing him in between her words as she sits on his lap while telling him not to talk. She appears to be a very controlling personality and I’m not so sure that Brad is digging it.

Who gets the boot?

At the rose ceremony, he ends up picking Michelle, Alli, Britt, Jackie, and Chantal last. I think this may be Chantal’s wake up call to get herself together and try not give Brad so much grief (as he noted).

Next week, the gang is all off to Costa Rica for some fun in the sun!

Stay tuned for more tears, cheers, and drama!
