'Vampire Diaries' Season 4 Episode 10 Recap: After School Special

Moment of Silence
With no thanks to Klaus, Mystic falls mourns the death of their leader mayor Lockwood, thus putting the town in desperate need of a new leader, making it obvious that Rudy Owens (Bonnie’s father) would be the perfect choice for this role. (Pause for reaction).  At least we can say this isn’t the dumbest idea this town has encountered.

Episode 10 titled “After School Special” begins with a candlelit mass in Lockwood’s honor held by Sheriff Forbes. “How does a community stay strong after losing its leader?” the sheriff asks. This must have stricken a nerve for Tyler (Michael Trevino) since he walks out mid ceremony. Moments later, Elena (Nina Dobrev) spots a familiar face in the distance. The always curious Elena goes to investigate this supposed hallucination, until she runs into April who goes from confessing emotional nostalgia of her father to confronting that she is aware Elena is a vampire.  Vampire Diaries photo: CW

Guess who’s back!
Just when everyone thought they were safe again or at least with one less original roaming around, here comes Rebekah to ruin the day and to add, more pissed off than usual. It seems Lockwood isn’t the only one that is to be mourned in Mystic Falls as Stefan (Paul Wesley) mourns the loss of his relationship with Elena. It had come to his attention that she and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) slept together putting Stefan in a somber mood. Caroline (Candice Accola) the usual volunteer of tough love makes it clear for Stefan to not make it all about him and to be there for Tyler.

Meanwhile at the Gilbert house, Damon finds himself replaying saved voicemails from Elena, while Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig) are busy with vampire hunting 101. The lesson is cut short when Klaus enters the scene to ask how many vampires Jeremy has killed. When he reveals zero this does not make Klaus happy. Too preoccupied to care, Damon handles the matter himself by firing two shots in the chest at Klaus “That was for Carol Lockwood” Damon says.

Displeased with the news of her father accepting the role as mayor, Bonnie still offers to help. Rudy informs her that his new position is based on revenge of the death of his ancestors and that he is going to make some changes in order to protect her.

After School Detention
Elena, Caroline and Stefan are all together compelled by Rebekah to spill everything they know about the cure. After several moments of awkward silence, Caroline blurts out that Stefan and Elena are no longer together. Stefan interjects his knowledge of Elena’s actions with Damon. Still compelled, Rebekah makes Elena elaborate on why she slept with Damon.  I didn’t sleep with Damon because of the sire-bond,” Elena involuntarily confesses. “I slept with Damon because I’m in love with him”. If things weren’t awkward already, that definitely put it into perspective for everyone.

Later, Bonnie goes to vent to Professor Shane (David Alpay) about her father. “He hates my witch heritage. That’s why he travels all the time,” “He can’t handle it.” Shane uses this opportunity to give her a graduation present. A necklace that also has a human bone charm used to channel power by the 2000 year old witch Qetsiyah. As Bonnie leaves his office, she is greeted by one of the originals Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) who kidnaps Shane for Rebekah. To make things even more interesting, Rebekah invites Tyler by threatening the fate of his girlfriend Caroline. As Kol and Rebekah prepare to bring Shane along to the conversation they learn he is incapable of being compelled “compulsion won’t work, it’s a little trick I picked up in Tibet” leaving them to find an alternate plan to get him to tell where the cure is.

Soon after, Elena is compelled to play a game of Truth or Dare causing her to expose more of how she feels for Damon and Stefan “Lately I feel like I’m a project, like I’m a problem that needs to be fixed.” “I think I make him sad, and I can’t be with someone like that, because when he looks at me, all he sees is a broken toy.” It wasn’t until Rebekah asks her love for Stefan that Elena reveals she no longer is in love with him. Breaking the tension, Tyler enters to soon be compelled to turn. Vampire Diaries photo: CW

Still at the Gilbert houses, Klaus surprisingly calm about being shot twice in the chest suggests to kill more townspeople for Jeremy to kill and grow the mark. His first victim the local pizza girl is compelled to reach Jeremy. Using a “car trouble” alibi Jeremy invites her in. She instantly attacks Matt. As Jer hears the commotion and jumps in to help aka kill the crazy pizza girl, Damon, Matt and Jeremy soon watch his tattoo grow even larger.

Black Magic
Back at Mystic Falls High, Bonnie runs into April, still brainwashed, she reveals that the rest are already compelled to spill about the cure and that Shane is next to be interrogated. Quickly Bonnie does a protection spell to shield him. As Kol drowns Shane for answers, Shane’s lungs aren’t filling with water. It isn’t until April collapses that Bonnie discovers she linked them together.

While Tyler struggles to turn, Elena, and Stefan use the opportunity to run. They run into a panicked Bonnie whose spell backfired. shortly Bonnie finds Shane in his office with no empathy to what happened. Pissed, Bonnie accuses Shane of tricking her into using black magic. “It’s a way of doing magic that isn’t monitored by nature or the spirits,” Shane says. “It isn’t good or bad. But it also has no limits. So how you use it is up to you.” Since Bonnie is “the key to everything.”

Things shift to Caroline consoling Tyler. Able to contain his human form, Tyler confesses the guilt he holds for his mother’s death. “I should have saved her,” he says. Rebekah randomly gains a bit of humanity by offering to compel Stefan to forget what he knows about Elena and Damon. Of course the catch to her generosity is she refuses to make him forget Elena the way Klaus did. Later on, we see Elena and Damon on the phone. She tells him that her love is the most real things she has ever felt. Putting Damon in a soft spot he tells Elena “Look, I’m going to get this cure for you. Get in your car right now and come to me”

As the episode comes to an end Stefan reveals that Shane is not dead and that he willing to help find the cure since “whoever finds the cure first decides what to do with it” Damon and Jeremy walk into a bar to find Klaus and several bodies “in transition."
