In “True Lies,” Silas (Paul Wesley) is still on a mission, and lately that involves getting into everyone's head.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) deals with the grief of her father (Rick Worthy), while Katherine (Nina Dobrev) attempts to outrun Silas until she discovers the entire town is compelled to capture her. Stefan (Wesley) remains to have constant daydreams of he and Elena (Dobrev) while still locked away underwater. Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena struggle to figure out exactly how their roommate was murdered (suicide just doesn’t seem like a plausible explanation to them.)

Meanwhile, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) searches for Stefan's body while Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) work to keep Katherine far away from Silas. Elena discovers that Dr. Wesley Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) a professor on campus is linked to Megan's murder. Elena suggests she and Caroline sit in one of his classes to find more information.

After the devastating news that Tyler (Michael Trevino) will not be joining Caroline this semester, she’s already getting new admirers, including Jesse (Kendrick Sampson)- who she runs into during Maxfield's lecture and seems to be rather smitten with her.

Later, during an off-campus bonfire, Elena also interacts with Jesse, who reveals some interesting information about Dr. Maxfield. Rumor has it that he is part of a secret society that meets at the Whittemore house. Before he could reveal any more information he's knocked out cold by none other than Damon. Can you say jealous much? While Matt and Jeremy play babysitter, Katherine seems to be playing into her role quite nicely. It's evident that she is having a rather difficult time accepting her mortality.

It was only a matter of time until Silas learned that there are travelers watching him through Matt. Temporarily dead (thanks to the Gilbert ring), Matt discovers the truth about Bonnie. However, once he draws back to his body from the other side, he won't have any recollection of speaking with her.

Still completely compelled by Silas, Elena is now instructed to torture and kill Damon. Trying to save his own life and hers, Damon fights to get Elena to focus on breaking Silas' hold. Once Jesse finally came to, we see Caroline begin to possibly rethink holding a candle for Tyler. They both seem to know what it's like to be the only one carrying the relationship.

While looking for Matt, Silas begins to go after Jeremy. Thanks to his hunting gene, Jeremy is more focused on killing Silas than he is fearing him. In what is most likely the first random act of kindness we've seen from our former vampire, Katherine saves Jeremy's life by shooting Silas. Damon finally gets Elena to break Silas' compulsion by focusing on Stefan. (Probably the last strategy he wanted to use, but it got the job done.) Silas soon runs into the travelers that have been using Matt as a human binocular. Though surprisingly after Nadia (Olga Fonda) betrays her partner Gregor (Hans Obma) and murders him, It seems that she has an agenda all her own.

Elena decides to head back home to give her respects to Bonnie's father and help find Stefan. Before leaving, Dr. Westfield informs her that he in fact knew her father and may have information that she'll want to hear. Sheriff Forbes updates Damon on Stefan. Deep in the woods, they find the safe Stefan was locked into. Although it seems that he is free, he's free and starving.
