‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 7 Recap: “Death and the Maiden”

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 7 Recap: “Death and the Maiden”

It’s the 11th hour in this episode of The Vampire Diaries. After being stabbed in the neck by his one true love, Silas (Paul Wesley) isn’t exactly in the best mood. This can go the same for his “shadow self” Stefan (Wesley). Thanks to Tessa, Stefan now has his memory back. Having your memories back all at once is one thing. Having dark memories back all at once is a whole other story. Locked away in the Salvatore cellar, Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan work to make sure that Amara (Dobrev) doesn’t kill herself.  In order to bring Bonnie (Kat Graham) back from the other side, Amara has to be in one piece to complete the spell. Keeping his word, Professor Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) helps Katherine (Dobrev) look into what is making her age.

Age Before Beauty

According to Maxfield’s research, she doesn’t have too much time. Now that she is mortal, her body is catching up with itself. Apparently, the mother-daughter moment Nadia (Olga Fonda) thought she had didn’t exactly mean all much to Katherine. Having other things on her agenda, Katherine fails to get through to Nadia that she has no interest in being her mother. Still numb after regaining his memory, Stefan realizes that the only way for him to move on is to be the one to kill Silas.

Jeremy and Bonnie learn that not only is Amara the anchor to the other side, she can see and feel the dead. This sparks an idea for the group. Since Amara wants to die (after being trapped for over 2,000 years), the best solution is to cast a spell switching her place as the anchor to Bonnie. Unfortunately, the only living witch they know capable of completing this spell is psycho witch Tessa (Janina Gavankar). In order for her to fulfill this spell, the only available source is for her to draw off Amara’s doppelgangers. Before any magic can actually be done, Katherine demands Tessa reverse her aging. Using Bonnie’s grimoire as a talisman, Tessa uses the blood of each doppelganger to generate the spell. However, Silas crashes the party deferring all hope for Bonnie.

True Love Prevails

Using his powers to throw a stake in Tessa, things start to look dim for the fate of Bonnie’s life. Stefan takes Amara as a ransom in order to get Silas alone. Having the most genuine moment he’s probably ever had in centuries, Silas takes every bit of strength he has to kill Amara. Before he can even finish saying goodbye, Stefan rushes in to get his revenge on Silas. Taking a page from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Amara kills herself with the dagger Stefan uses to murder Silas.

All hope is not lost when Tessa (wounded) is able to complete her spell. Realizing Jeremy can feel her, everyone is amazed to see her alive. Tessa gets the vengeance she has wanted for all these years now that Silas is gone.  However, making one last evil gesture, she refuses to help Katherine from dying.

Now being the anchor to the other side, Bonnie faces the price of being able to feel every soul cross through her- to which Tessa is her first. Worried for Stefan, Elena questions if Silas’ demise really will erase all of his pain. Making one last attempt, Nadia tries to get Katherine to come stay with her. But like Katherine, she travels alone.
