The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: “Monster’s Ball”

Jeepers Creepers

After his recent transformation as a vampire, Jesse (Kendrick Sampson) has been held captive by Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett), who is undergoing intense research for what still remains to a mystery. Photo: CW

Elena (Nina Dobrev) respects Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) wishes and goes back to campus. She uses her time to find out why professor Maxfield covered up why Megan’s (Hayley Kiyoko) death.

Caroline (Candice Accola) has a few of her own distractions as she is making up for lost times with Tyler (Michael Trevino). Though it’s been a month since Megan’s death, her memorial still receives a great deal of attention. Elena meets a childhood friend of Megan. From what she can tell, it appears he doesn’t buy the “suicide” alibi either.

Thanks to Tessa’s (Janina Gavankar) crafty spell of erasing Silas’ power of mind control, he struggles to find Nadia, who is holding Katherine hostage.  Katherine soon learns that while she is aware that Silas needs her blood to become immortal, he needs every drop to complete the process.  Damon (Ian Somerhalder) decides to use this opportunity as a way to bring back Bonnie  His idea is to swap Silas’ life for hers.  Though Silas’ agrees to go through with Damon’s proposal in return for Bonnie’s life, Damon must kill Stefan.

Trick or Treat

It’s that time again! Everyone is getting ready for the Whitmore Historical Ball, and Elena utilizes the night to get more answers. She’s eventually able to put a name to Megan’s childhood friend, who is introduced as Aaron (Shaun Sipos). Photo: CW

In order to find the anchor to the other side, Silas must pose as Stefan and sweet talk his way to finding its location. For Silas to successfully fulfill this plan, that requires a certain doppelganger to be out of commission.

After playing Q&A with Nadia, Katherine learns the true reason this particular traveler has been tracking her for over 500 years.  Just when things couldn’t get any more like a soap opera, Katherine discovers Nadia is in fact her daughter.

Two things are learned about Dr. Maxfield that night. One, he seems to know a lot about the things that go bump in the night after warning Elena to leave Whitmore for her own sake. He also seems to have a strong connection to Aaron, who is also linked to Megan’s murder.

Though Silas’ may have gotten Tessa to admit she still has a soft spot for her evil ex, he should have know even better to never piss off a witch (especially a crazy one like Tessa). Once Stefan regained consciousness (or life to be exact), he warned Tessa of Silas’ antics. Since he broke her heart years ago, it’s only fair she break his. Tessa uses her powers to reach into his heart. Though it doesn’t exactly kill him, the pain on his face sufficed for the moment. Our favorite on again off again couple part ways for what may finally be the last time. Tyler refuses to stay at Whitmore due to his desire to kill Klaus.

Excited to see a cold, grey Silas lying on the floor, Katherine is shortly forced to feed her blood to him- since she is the key to bring back Bonnie and terminate Silas for good. After having all of the blood drained out of her like a juice box, it appears she hasn’t exactly taken a turn for the worst. With Katherine still alive will this put a damper on killing Silas?
