'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Episode 9 Recap- The Cell

In this episode of The Vampire Diaries, the scene periodically flashes back to 1953, where Damon (Ian Somerhalder) first became introduced to Augustine.

Forgetting that Jesse (Kendrick Sampson) was more than just a brainwashed vampire, Elena (Nina Dobrev) runs into Aaron (Shaun Sipos), who is devastated by his demise. Another “Suicide” attempt is the story everyone is telling. Elena finally breaks down the truth to Aaron, claiming that Jesse and Megan’s death was not by suicide but by murder. She goes to tell him that Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett)  has a lot to do with what have been happening on campus. Deciding he needs to hear both sides of the story, Aaron goes to the Whitmore estate to find Maxfield. Elena learns that Aaron is in fact a Whitmore himself. During her visit, she sees a picture of her father, who was also a part of Augustine.

Back at the Salvatore’s, Caroline helps Stefan with some psycho therapy by using the same safe he was trapped in to deal with his anxiety. The truth is finally revealed to Aaron when he discovers that Maxfield hasn’t been studying rare diseases of the human body, but if fact vampires.  If that wasn’t complicated enough, Maxfield also made a point to reveal to Aaron the family secret.

Still captured, Damon shares his past Augustine experiences with Elena. Damon had been stuck there for five years enduring every gruesome form of punishment possible. However, he did make a friend. Enzo (Michael Malarkey), who worked for Augustine until he was exposed as a vampire.  Luckily for Damon, this helped him prevent losing all of his humanity.

With nothing else to do but wait, Damon shares more of his tales. Damon goes into detail about the annual Augustine holiday party showcasing their tortured vampires over food and wine. It seemed this was their only opportunity for the two to escape. Photo: CW

Caroline’s attempt to help Stefan doesn’t exactly seem to be heading in a positive direction, and having Katherine there as aid doesn’t appear to help either.  What was thought to be a story of brotherhood and courage turns into betrayal.  Shutting off his humanity, Damon leaves Enzo behind a guilt that even Damon can’t run away from. After an intense engagement of psychotherapy, Stefan and Katherine take the opportunity to celebrate their success.

Aaron is overwhelmed by all the information about vampires and who really killed his parents. Gun in hand and ready to pull the trigger, Damon steps in to confess that he was the murderer.  Seeking revenge, Damon admits that killing Whitmores had become one of his favorite past times. Before he can even explain he is shot in the head.

Damon reawakes, but unfortunately Elena is no longer with him. She’s been taken into the laboratory, but fortunately she has company turns out Enzo didn’t die after all.
