The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 15 Recap: "Stand By Me"

"Bookmark

In the last episode of The Vampire Diaries, another life is lost and Elena tests her strength as she struggles to deal with the death of her brother.

Say It Isn’t So
Bonnie (Kat Graham) wakes up in the woods to a miraculously healed Shane (David Alpay) who claims was healed by no other than Silas. Back at Mystic Falls we watch Elena (Nina Dobrev) have a difficult time accepting the death of Jeremy. Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) stay close to help aid her through this devastating time. Not even the rotten smell of Jeremy’s (Steven R McQueen) corpse and Dr. Fell (Torrey Devitto) confirming Jeremy’s death could convince Elena that there is nothing else they can do for him. Matt walks in to see his friend’s body and immediately breaks down.

Bonnie is frantic over the news to which magic begins to overpower her. Damon continues to look for Bonnie. Rebekah (Claire Holt), still on the island tags along with him. The roles have now reversed for Galen as he is now the prisoner and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is torturing him for answers. Shane used the power of 3 massacres and wants Bonnie to create the 4th she soon hallucinates to see Jeremy (Silas) asking her for help.

Seeing Elena getting worse with Jeremy’s death Stefan encourages Damon to come home, saying the sire bone may be the only thing to help her. Just as soon as Damon loses hope to finding Bonnie, she soon appears hazy and disoriented. Once she notices Damon, she excitedly shares she knows of a way to bring Jeremy back to life. Matt takes Elena to an old landmark to help her have some solace towards Jer’s death.

Back at the island, Rebekah takes Galen to the cave. “If you don’t use the cure to kill him doesn’t matter if you’re human or vampire you’re doomed,” says Galen to Rebekah.

Bonnie, now completely brainwashed, explains Shane’s plan to the rest of the group, who feel she’s drank more than her fair share of the kool-aid. Elena, already in her own state of delusion seems to be plotting an idea of her own. While the rest are still confused with Bonnie’s plan, the phone rings. It’s April asking for Jeremy. And before she decides to give an excuse to his absence, she tells April “Sorry he’s dead” and hangs up.  Elena goes up to Jeremy’s room, finally realizing the reality that she has been in denial over all day. Once she sees his pale lifeless face and smells his body decapitating, Elena begins to break down, grabbing lighter fluid and running through each room of the house. “Every inch of this house is filled with memories of the people that I love that have died,” says an emotional Elena, who is livid and ready to burn the house to the ground.Photo: CW

Stefan, Elena and Damon try to talk her off the ledge but she’s had enough. Frantic and emotional, Elena falls to her knees- clearly exhausted by the number of loses she has faced in the past few years. Stefan asks Damon to help up, but he soon regrets that decision when Damon tells her Elena to turn off her humanity. Matt drives Bonnie home, where “Shane” appears putting more craziness in her head.

The real Shane is found by Rebekah, who appears dead until he grabs her legs moaning “Silas.” Stefan is irate that Damon made such an impulsive decision towards Elena’s compassion. Elena still decides to go on with her decision and burn down the Gilbert home. Damon and Stefan refrain from changing Elena’s mind as all three walk away as Jeremy’s body and the rest of the home burns to ash.
