‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 11 Recap: 500 Years of Solitude

Tension builds in this episode of The Vampire Diaries. Once Katherine (Nina Dobrev) became mortal her life on earth soon turned into a decaying experience. Due to the fact that for 500 years she technically has been dead, her body is finally catching up with itself. This is only somber news for Nadia (Olga Fonda). After spending years searching for her mother, she may now risk the chance of losing her for good.

For the rest of the gang, it’s more of a celebration. While most people mourn the loss or soon to be loss of a friend or family member, and reflecting on the time they spent alive, Katherine’s time on earth hasn’t exactly been spent finding world peace. Each member has a personal grievance towards Katarina, and sorrow is the last thing they are feeling.  Photo: CW

Much of the episode flashes back to Bulgaria, 1490. (The night Katherine gives birth to Nadia). After the harsh breakup between Elena (Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) that all will have to be put on hold since all concentration is now focused on Katherine. Not a common time of festivity, but they do have good reason to be a little thankful. The only one willing to show any compassion at all is Stefan (Paul Wesley).

Nadia (still refusing to watch her mother die) has found a way to save her. The hardest part of this plan is to convince the group to even consider helping her. Unfortunately, Matt (Zach Roerig) has officially become the poster child for ransom. Using Matt as a ploy, Stefan and Elena “volunteer” to assist.

Since Katherine comes from a line of travelers she needs to complete a spell in order to put her soul into someone else’s body. To their knowledge, Nadia will be the new carrier. The reason she lures Stefan and Elena is because the spell is only effective when using doppelgangers.

While Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) help search for Matt, Caroline (Candice Accola) expresses her frustration of not having any “scandalous sex.”  Damon is having a little too much fun at Katherine’s expense as he gets inside her head. Out of everyone, Damon harbors the most hate towards Katherine.

Nadia, (prepared to teach Katherine the traveler spell) listens as Katherine tells her that she is ready to die. She does however, confess that letting her go was the biggest mistake she had ever made.

During their search for Matt, another rival comes to show his support though he may have only used it as an excuse for something else. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) makes an experience and once again we watch Caroline fight her true feelings.  This may or may not be the best time for Klaus to give an ultimatum; due to the fact her hormones are at a ten. Proposing to stay away forever, Klaus ask that Caroline tell him how she truly feels.  And how she really feels is not exactly on the lines of endless love.  History is finally made when the two convey their affection for each other.

With what seems like only minutes left, the gang (plus one rescued Matt) all wait in anticipation. Another visitor arrives and it couldn’t at the most inconvenient time; Tyler (Michael Trevino), who seems to have taken a break from obsessing) comes to join in on the final countdown. The expression on Caroline’s face says enough.

Elena decides to make peace with Katherine. She forgives her for everything she has ever done to cause her pain. What seemed like a heartfelt moment and a closed chapter quickly changes back to the Katherine we all know and maybe even grew to love. Reciting the traveler spell, Katherine links her soul inside of Elena. Apparently, this was planned between Nadia and Katherine. Just confirms the phrase, like mother like daughter.
