‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Episode 1 Recap: “I’ll Remember”

"Bookmark

In the Vampire Diaries' Season 5 finale, we saw the gang in a war between realms. The other side was fading fast and it was up to the group to pull anyone (that mattered) back to the land of the living. With only few seconds left, our favorite bad boy Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and former witch Bonnie (Kat Graham) were last seen in what appeared to be an abyss to practically nothing.

Not only has the group lost two members of their team, almost all of them are now barred from Mystic Fall due to the travelers anti-magic spell.    Photo: CW

Everything is Fine

Approximately four months later, Alaric (Matthew Davis) is teaching at Whitmore and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is coping with the loss of Bonnie by finding any distraction he can to avoid his grief. Caroline (Candice Accola) is also finding other distractions by searching for a loophole to the traveler spell. After the loss of his brother, two best friends, and any hope for a cure to be human again, Stefan (Paul Wesley) took the opportunity to take some time away from it all. However, the award for most jaded vampire has to go to Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev).

When it comes to grief, it is certain that Elena practically wrote the book on it. But unfortunately, the more she continues to lose someone, the harder it is for her to cope. We’ve seen Elena use different tactics to handlings her grief. One way is causing her to totally shut off her humanity. While she still remains to be herself she fails to accept that Damon is no longer with her.

Blood Lust

Since Luke (Chris Brochu) feels guilty for cutting the spell short and causing her boyfriend to be sucked into oblivion, he has agreed to supply her with a set of ancient psychotropic herbs that will allow her to contact him. Unfortunately, his act of kindness is now backfiring. Elena’s urge to see Damon grows stronger, causing her to lash out. Tyler (Michael Trevino) can also relate, now that he no longer is a werewolf. Though he no longer harbors the curse, he must remain to keep his rage under control. Matt (Zach Roerig) still remains to be the alpha of the group, as his only superpower is pure loyalty.

The side effects of the herbs are taking a toll on Elena. The drug is causing her thirst to grow and prompting her to attack innocents. Searching for a little bit of hope, Elena reaches out to Stefan, who gives her a dose of tough love, forcing her to deal with Damon’s death alone. Desperate, Elena asks Alaric to compel her to forget she ever loved Damon. She may want to hold off a little longer. For it seems he and Bonnie are in some type of limbo.
