‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Episode 9 Recap: “I Alone”

Spoiler Alert! Caroline (Candice Accola) is not in this episode (boo)!

We start off the episode with Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) she goes to Alaric’s apparent to unwind after a stressful day, but has no awareness that he has been compelled by Damon (Ian Somerhalder). In order to find the ascendant as fast as possible, Damon decides to use his best friend as a puppet, since Jo is the holder of the key to Bonnie (and Kai’s) freedom. Photo credit: CW

Sobriety seems to keeping up with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), but still refrains to show any optimism with Elena (Nina Dobrev), who reveals to him that Bonnie (Kat Graham) is alive. Tyler (Michael Trevino) wants to keep his promise by keeping Liv (Penelope Mitchell) safe. However, growing tired of pizza brunches and testosterone has grown astray for Liv. Since Liv is the only witch that can help save Bonnie she takes this opportunity to get the hell out of dodge.

Damon and Elena meet up with Liv at the graveyard, where we lost Bonnie in the first place. Liv has a hard time believing that Jo just willingly gave up the ascendant. Nevertheless, Liv is never one to harp on suspicious behavior and does the spell anyway. Damon and Elena have an eight hour window to save Bonnie.

Like everyone has been worried about, Kai (Chris Wood) is finally 20 years into the present. After killing his cab driver, Kai stops in the local pub for a drink (or in his case a Zima). Once Liv gets past the not so phony date of birth on Kai’s ID, it’s too late for her to get away. Tyler, coming out of nowhere, saves Liv.

Matt (Zach Roerig) keeps his end of a previous bargain with Sarah and takes her to a restaurant to meet with Stefan. Enzo decides to crash this family reunion. Why? Because that’s just what Enzo (Michael Malarkey) does. Damon and Elena discover that Bonnie is six and a half hours away in Indiana. Luckily, with zero traffic, she should be there in no time. While they wait, Elena finds out that Damon in fact compelled Alaric to get Jo to hand over the ascendant. Just when she started to have a little bit of empathy for him, looks like poor Damon will have to start all over.

Stefan calls out Sarah’s need to find her family by saying she actually is not the real Sarah. Apparently, Stefan has been keeping tabs on the real Sarah to make sure she had a normal life. He made sure not to tell Damon this information, since he was the one who murdered her mother. Faux Sarah and Sarah both went to the same summer camp. Since the real Sarah had no interest in learning about her family, faux Sarah (who we learn real name is Monique) decides to inherit them herself. (Since apparently anyone is better than her foster parents.)

Stefan agrees to let her go if she stays away from his family, but Enzo (who feels out of the loop) snaps Monique’s neck to prove some kind of point. Damon and Elena’s trip gets cut short when Liv is forced to send them back.

Kai attempts makes a deal with Tyler (by threatening him with a shard of glass first) saying that he will spare Liv’s life. Most likely this involves him to trigger the werewolf curse again (the things we do for love).

Bonnie finally arrives, but no thanks to Kai, Damon and Elena are gone. This is probably the first time Bonnie has finally showed any kind of anguish, since she is notorious for being extremely optimistic in the worst situations (ones that usually involve her being killed).
