'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Episodes 12 Recap: The Devil Inside

Now that Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is setting camp into Elena’s (Dobrev) body, she is going to have to make some changes to her usual lifestyle. In order for her evil plan to work, she has to convince everyone she is in fact Elena Gilbert. The only other obstacle to this plan is Elena. To successfully have complete control of Elena’s body, Katherine must cast another traveler spell.

Luckily for Elena, her friends are quick to notice her distant behavior. After failing to answer her phone, Stefan (Paul Wesley) reaches out to the group on where she may be. Photo: CW

Officially back in Mystic Falls, Tyler (Michael Trevino) appears to be on a whole new level of low. Stressed from his failed attempts in New Orleans, Matt (Zach Roerig) decides to throw him a welcome back party (hoping this may cheer him up). Caroline (Candice Accola), is dealing with her own personal stress and tries to disregard her recent hookup with Klaus as well as the unexpected reunion of her ex-boyfriend.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) seems to be harboring much regret of his decision to break up with Elena and decides to undo the damage made. However, before he can reach out to Elena, an old friend has business that needs his full attention. Still seeking revenge after being betrayed many years ago, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) threatens Damon to kill Aaron (Shaun Sipos).

Katherine is starting to realize that playing Elena isn’t as independent as she’d like it to be. Since she is used to only worrying about herself, Katherine must adapt to her friends confiding in her.  Caroline is anxious to tell Elena of her rendezvous with Klaus. Katherine uses “girl talk” to her advantage after spotting Tyler close by. Once he over hears, he is instantly outraged.

The spell for Katherine to permanently become Elena is later completed. Damon tells Elena his feelings about getting back together. Not realizing he’s really talking to Katherine. She makes the decision for Elena and tells Damon to move on. Obviously this does not set well for Damon, since Elena is the key to keeping him from being reckless.

Nadia (Olga Fonda) is let down once again but accepts Katherine’s need to stay in Mystic Falls. She has spent over 500 years running and would like to enjoy life in one place. Damon decides his only solution to cope is to team up with Enzo. Contradicting his previous statement to let Aaron go, Damon shuts off all humanity and kills him.
