‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 16 Recap: While you were sleeping

"Bookmark

After three weeks of being trapped in her own mind, Elena (Nina Dobrev) is finally back. However, she’s not exactly her old self. No thanks to Katherine (Dobrev), Elena is now infected with the ripper virus. In order to keep her safety, Stefan (Paul Wesley) uses Liv to trap Elena. Since the university is on spring break, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) uses a spell to seal Elena on campus.

Locked away yet again, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) helps Elena use the time that she has to get her up to speed. Understanding that Katherine was the one to dump him, the two may have a shot at rekindling their relationship. Caroline (Candice Accola) heads to Wes’ (Rick Cosnett) laboratory hoping to find an antidote. During her search, she discovers Elena is infected with a stronger edition of the virus. The venom from Nadia (Olga Fonda) is now infused with the virus, making it more lethal. The only way for Damon and Elena to be cured is Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Bonnie (Kat Graham) spends her spring break teaching Liv how to be a better witch. From what it seems, Liv’s ego is Bonnie’s biggest challenge. Photo: CW

With not much to do but wait, Elena discovers Katherine’s journals. Reading them triggers her to hallucinate. Her subconscious struggles to understand how no one realized that Katherine had been impersonating her.

Stefan and Caroline agree to meet with Enzo. However, in order to get the antidote, they have to make a deal with the travelers.  After Wes’ death, the travelers continue his work on the ripper cure.  In order for them to do this, they need a doppelganger. Sloan (Caitlin McHugh), the leader of the travelers must cast a linking spell to find him. Since the last time that Stefan was used as a human GPS caused his memory to be wiped clean, he is not exactly enthused by this information.

The venom in Elena’s system is slowly causing her to deteriorate.  During one of her hallucinations regarding Aaron (Shaun Sipos), Elena runs into Luke (Chris Brochu) a former “friend” of Katherine. Apparently Katherine had been using Luke to feed. Elena compels Luke to find Bonnie so she can get Liv to drop the seal.

Feeling powerless, Damon threatens Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to let him help Elena. Elena becomes completely overwhelmed by the virus. She attacks Liv threatening her to drop the seal.

After an intense ritual, the linking spell becomes a success. They are able to find that Stefan’s doppelganger is in Atlanta. Damon finds Elena as she is at wits end. Damon confesses that it wasn’t Elena that killed Aaron, but him. Enzo keeps his end of the bargain and hands over the antidote. In order to keep the travelers off their back Caroline volunteers to go with Enzo to find the doppelganger.

We later learn that Bonnie’s newbie witch isn’t exactly who she says she is. Apparently, Luke is kin to Liv who isn’t at all new to magic. Luke seems to have information targeting to Bonnie, though it is not yet clear what that information is.

Damon and Elena reevaluate their relationship yet again, agreeing to finally call it quits however; they can’t resist one last romantic rendezvous.
