The story of Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Maggie become the center of attention during this episode of the vampire diaries.  Bonnie (Kat Graham) faces the reality of her fate while Tyler (Michael Trevino) is being held prisoner by the travelers.

Enzo made a deal with the travelers to get information on the location of Maggie, but it is soon brought to his attention that she was murdered in 1960. A photograph, (given to him by Sloan) suggests that the murderer was Stefan (Paul Wesley) (based on his history as a ripper).

Furious by the news, Enzo seeks out revenge. He compels students on campus to play as “extras” in a local pub and induces a few others to keep Luke hostage. This forces Liv (Penelope Mitchell) to use her magic against Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) to keep her brother alive. Photos: CW

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries to get to the bottom of Enzo’s beef with Stefan. He then meets with Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite Macintyre), who gives him some old police reports around the time of Maggie’s murder. Once he sees the photographs, Damon discovers that he was the one who killed Maggie, not Stefan.

Flashing back to 1960, Stefan did in fact encounter with Maggie. When she discovered what Damon had done to Enzo she sought to avenge his death by killing Damon. Looking out for his brother, Stefan uses his vampire tactics to scare her off which may have only encouraged her. On November 8th 1960, Maggie meets up with Stefan. Once he discovers she wants to send him back to Augustine he murders her. After five years of waiting for his brother to come to his “rescue,” Damon stages Maggie’s murder to look as if Stefan was the culprit.

While the rest are held hostage, Tyler is kept chained and pasangered. Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) conducts an experiment to test whether the witches curse can be broken using Stefan and Elena’s blood. The first step of this experiment requires a volunteer. Sloan (Caitlin McHugh) agrees to be turned using the blood of Tyler. If the experiment is a success, the travelers will have more power against Mystic Falls.

While playing bad cop, Enzo flashes back to his last days with Maggie. Maggie had proposed that he turn her, so they could run away together.  Enzo refuses to put her life at risk and compels her to forget about him and leave Augustine. The fate of the other side lingers more and more causing Bonnie to ask Liv to find a way to save the other side. Once it deteriorates for good, so does Bonnie. Damon tries to save his brother and make peace with Enzo by confessing that he was the one who murdered Maggie.

Hoping he takes his anger out on Damon instead, Enzo refuses, telling him “If I hate you then I have nothing left.” With no other choice, Enzo turns off his humanity. Enzo must be stopped, but the only way he can be is if Stefan gets to him first. With Elena’s life on the line, Stefan takes immediate action and kills Enzo the best way he knows how (through his heart).

Stefan asks the group to keep quiet about Enzo being dead. Since he was the only friend Damon had, Stefan fears the news will destroy him. Bonnie confesses the truth to Jeremy about what could happen to her if the other side is destroyed. In the last phase of the experiment, the travelers learn that the doppelganger blood is able to remove witch magic. Unfortunately for Sloan, they also learn that without vampire magic to keep her alive she will revert back to her human form (deceased). After passing through Bonnie, more evidence is shown that the other side is severely doomed when Enzo is seen as a ghost. This gives off the impression that any supernatural being is able to enter in and out.
