‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 21: Promised Land

Keeping his promise, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries to find a way to bring Enzo (Michael Malarkey) back from the other side. “Mr. Skyes” (a traveler) is interrogated by Damon, who informs him that there is no way of stopping Markos. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are captured by the travelers to collect more blood for their spell. However, a mystery conqueror sets them free.

Enzo is losing patience and pressures Bonnie (Kat Graham) to finish the spell to bring him back immediately. We later discover our hero is Julian’s wife Maria (Tamara Austin). Once Markos’ spell is complete, Julian will die if he remains in Tyler’s body (Michael Trevino). Maria attempts to keep both Elena and Stefan far away from the other travelers. Before they can make their great escape, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) team up to kill Elena and Stefan. They need at least one of the doppelgangers dead in order to stop the travelers from completing their spell. Unfortunately the only person who wound up deceased is Maria. Photo: CW

The spell has already begun causing the rest of the group (minus Matt) to draw back to their last human state. Damon gets Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) to move the travelers’ bodies from the cave to the Salvatore mansion as a form of ransom to draw Markos in his direction. Bonnie finally reveals to Caroline (Candice Accola) the truth. In order for her to protect her friends, she confesses to have lied about a potential spell to save everyone as well as herself.

Julian (Trevino) attempts to help Damon fight Markos by biting him, but the traveler spell causes his fangs to retreat. Damon begins to feel the effects of the spell. His daylight ring no longer works, and the gunshot wound he received during his last hour as a human appears in his chest. Markos suggest that if he wants to live, they must outrun the spell.

With little time left, Bonnie thinks of a last minute plan to save the other side and she searches for Enzo to contact Maria. Bonnie’s plan is to use the same spell Maria and the other travelers used to bring back Markos. Unfortunately, the force of the other side causes Maria to get swept away.

Jeremy finds Damon and picks him up to locate the rest of the group. Matt and Jeremy decide to head back to Mystic Falls while the others try to get as far away as they can. Stefan and Caroline stay behind to wait for Bonnie. Moments later, Julian appears and asks about Maria. Hesitant, Stefan tells him that Maria didn’t make it. The loss of his wife stirs up outrage, causing the two to fight.  (SPOILER ALERT!) The battle shortly ends to where we see Julian holding Stefan’s heart in his hand. Shocked that Stefan is now dead, Caroline rushes to his side.

Bonnie and Enzo try to strategize another plan to fix the other side. In the middle of their conversation, Bonnie notices Stefan standing from across the room. She immediately recognizes that Stefan is dead. He asks if she has figured out a way to bring him back, but she regrets to inform him that the plan she had is now lost.  Stefan passes through to the other side and we end the episode with a frantic Caroline screaming for help.
