It’s Christmas time in Mystic Falls, and for the most part things aren’t exactly jolly.

Kai (Chris Wood) holds Joc (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) captive. If Kai finds the Knife holding Jo’s magic, he’ll be able to merge with Jo, kill her, and successfully be the leader of Gemini.

Luckily for them, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has already stolen and hidden the knife. Tyler (Michael Trevino) comes up with an idea to save Liv (Penelope Mitchell), and Luke (Chris Brochu). If Jo can merge with Kai, she will have the chance to take him down. (Keyword: chance) Though Liv is all for the idea, Luke isn’t exactly on board.

Since Caroline (Candice Accola) can’t go home for the holidays (no thanks to the travelers), her Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) is determined to make Caroline’s Christmas memorable so of course she would invite her favorite person to share this experience with…Stefan (Paul Wesley) Looks like mom has a few tricks up her sleeve.

Matt (Zach Roerig) is officially tired of Enzo’s antics and asks Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to help kill him. Liv attempts to convince Jo to take her knife and draw back her magic to defeat Kai. But just before she can refuse, Kai (of course) shows up, steals the dagger, and uses it to stab Liv. All of this convinces Jo it’s finally time to settle the score. And with that, she takes the knife, grabs her power from it, and is ready to take on Kai. Alaric and Damon show threatening Kai, but Jo begs them to stop. She just wants a little time to strengthen her magic so she can defeat Kai.

Turns out Sheriff Forbes came to celebrate the holidays for more than one reason. Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan find out she has a terminal illness, one that Caroline doesn’t know about – and Stefan has to be the one to break it to her. “I haven’t been there for her. Caroline needed me and I ran away, so I have to do it,” Stefan said of Caroline.

Damon and Alaric keep Kai chained up while Jo strengthens her magic, but time runs out when Kai comes to a sudden realization. He knows he needs to absorb more magical power, and he knows the spell covering all of Mystic Falls is big enough to help him destroy his twin sister. So what does this crazy psycho killer do? He takes a page from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and absorbs all the magic the travelers left behind.

Due to Kai’s clever idea, Matt’s plan backfires with Enzo. Luckily for Matt, Enzo’s in a forgiving mood and lets him go without revenge.

Another good part to Kai sucking up the magic of the traveler’s spell, it allows the gang to finally go home! (well sort of). Just as Stefan and Damon are settling back into the Salvatore mansion, Elena knocks on the door. When Damon answers…he can’t see “I guess I could have told you about the cloaking spell,” he scoffs.

What does Kai have in store for Mystic Falls?
