‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Episode 2 Recap: “Never Let Me Go”

Still grieving over Jo’s death, Alaric (Matthew Davis) obtains an evil rock called The Phoenix Stone, which allegedly will resurrect Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe). In order for him to do this, he has been paying off one of the morgue workers to keep her body preserved. Bonnie (Kat Graham) desperately tries to convince him to get rid of this stone, but of course, he doesn’t. Coincidentally, this is also the stone Lily (Annie Wersching) was looking for last week, when she visited Enzo (Michael Malarkey) in New York City.

Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) casts a vervain-skin spell on Caroline (Candice Accola). Nora (Scarlett Byrne) later reveals to Caroline that Valerie has a crush on Stefan (Paul Wesley). Apparently, they met in 1906, and he wrote about her in his journal. If this were a Taylor Swift song, it would definitely make the Top 20.

It’s almost an annual tradition for poor Matt (Zach Roerig) to die at some point in the season. Lily compels him into signing the deed to the Salvatore house and un-inviting Damon and Stefan in. In order for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to recuse Caroline, Matt needs to die (temporarily). When Bonnie attempts to bring him back, she gets a quick flash from the stone and Matt is dead for nearly six minutes. At this point, Matt is officially fed up with always taking one for the team. Enzo admits to Lily that he doesn’t want to be seen as one of her children. Enzo expresses deeper feelings for Lily that possibly she shares as well. However, this could be a ploy to save Caroline. She has been the only person he could sincerely call a friend. The fact that he kidnapped her in the first place may have been staged.

After Lily finds out Damon is the culprit for murdering Malcolm, she summons the Heretics to capture Elena (Nina Dobrev) and throw her in the river. Damon agrees to leave Mystic Falls in order to keep her safe.

In this week’s flash-forward to three years from now, we get a glimpse into Caroline’s life. She is a high-powered TV producer living in Dallas and rocking at her job (of course). We also learn she is engaged! However, it’s not to Stefan. We also learn that she cannot return to Mystic Falls.

In the final moments of the episode, Caroline ignores a desperate phone call from Stefan that would have probably warned her about the crossbow-wielding enemy who was after Damon and Stefan in the season premiere flash forward. The woman manages to shoot Caroline with an arrow right through the chest, which does not bode well for our girl.

Tomorrow on #TVD, Stefan's past comes back to haunt him. Catch up on the latest episode now so you don't get spoiled: on.cwtv.com/TheVampireDiaries
