‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Episode 3 Recap “Age of Innocence”

"Bookmark

This episode begins with the three-year flash forward, as Stefan (Paul Wesley) calls Tyler (Michael Trevino) to ask about Caroline (Candice Accola). Tyler responds that he hasn't talked to Caroline and he doesn't want to get mixed up in their drama. Stefan reveals that his scar has opened up and tells Tyler to warn Caroline

Back in the present day, Bonnie (Kat Graham) has another terrifying vision followed by a blackout caused by the Phoenix Stone. (The people in her visions have the same X-shaped wounds that Stefan has in the future storyline.) When Bonnie meets up with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to confirm that Alaric (Matthew Davis) destroyed the stone; he lies and says he did.Photo: CW

Caroline is still being tortured by the Heretics, but she manages to briefly speak to Stefan on his cell phone that he left there when he tried to rescue her. Caroline mentions something about Stefan having a previous relationship with Valerie, but Stefan doesn't seem to remember.

Later when he sees his mom he tells her that he and Damon are not speaking which she seems pleased to hear - and asks her about Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore). Lily (Annie Wersching) tells Stefan that she's known Valerie longer than he has and she actually sent her to check on him in 1863. The same time she allegedly died, but was leaving for Europe.

Flashing back again, we see how Stefan and Valerie met at a Mystic Falls fair. Back at the house Valerie tells Caroline that she was the first love of Stefan's life, back when Stefan was still a human and Valerie was only a witch. It turns out Valerie was even pregnant with Stefan's child!

Damon, Alaric, and Bonnie go on a little mission to track down Lily's third Heretic son Oscar to trade for Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline. When they find Oscar (Wing Liu) at some random motel he invites them in having met Damon before and thinking that they're still on good terms. It turns out Oscar volunteered to complete a mission for Lily, but really he's just been enjoying his freedom instead of being a slave to Lily.

Bonnie asks Oscar to siphon away the horrible visions she's been having. However, Oscar becomes very serious at this point and he asks where the Phoenix Stone is. He now has power after siphoning magic out of Bonnie and is able to easily fight Damon, Alaric, and Bonnie when things turn south. Damon, Bonnie, and Alaric wake up after being knocked out to find Oscar gone, and Rick announces that he took the stone too. Bonnie is furious with Alaric for lying to her about destroying the stone. However, when they find Oscar later Bonnie uses her magic to inhibit Oscar and returns the stone to Alaric.  Regardless of her feelings for Alaric’s request, Bonnie finally agrees to help Alaric resurrect Jo.

Another piece of information learned is that Valerie became the first Heretic. After Lily's boyfriend Julian caught Valerie trying to sneak away to meet Stefan he beat her until she passed out to kill her unborn baby and to get her on the ship to go to New York with Lily and the rest of the gang.

Julian told Lily that he found Valerie after she was attacked and Lily gave Valerie her blood to heal her. But when Valerie woke up she was so upset that she killed herself, but due to Lily's blood she became a vampire instead.

Now that Oscar knows about the stone, his mission is to find Julian and Lily to resurrect him. However, because of the horrible thing that Julian did to her Valerie, she kills Oscar to stop Julian from coming back from the dead.
