‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Episode 15 Recap: "Let Her Go"

In this episode of The Vampire Diaries, the usual blood bath, vengeance quest and love lust is on a brief hiatus. Instead, the gang takes a moment to mourn the loss of Caroline's (Candice Accola) mother (Marguerite Macintyre) Damon struggles to prepare writing her eulogy since she requested he do it. Not only is he worried about saying the right thing, he wants to make sure he doesn't let down Stefan again (Since he failed to recite his own mother's eulogy).

Although Caroline would probably pick Damon to be the last person to recite her mother's eulogy, he does give her some words of wisdom in his own way:

"Today isn't the worst day of your life, today and tomorrow is a cake walk. There are going to be people around you day in and day out like they're afraid to leave you alone. The worst day? That’s tomorrow when there’s nothing but quiet," he said. Not the most cliché response to a griever, but still pretty accurate.Photo: CW

After 278 days in a supernatural prison world, Bonnie (Kat Graham) is finally close to getting herself home. She now has her magic back, the ascendant and no sociopaths in her way to stop her. Speaking of sociopaths, Kai (Chris Wood) reaches out to Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), who isn't having the best morning, and asks that he heal her. After spending all morning sick, Kai rules out that she may not have the food poisoning she thinks she may have obtained. Ever since his merge with Luke (Chris Brochu), he hasn't been responding well to the added magic.

However, he is a little bit nice now. Nevertheless, if he dies, so does Jo and the rest of his coven. He also adds that because he is now the leader of the coven, the prison worlds will collapse if he dies. Keep in mind that is “worlds” (plural), which means Bonnie is not the only person supernaturally trapped.

Seeing Tyler (Michael Trevino) completely distraught, Matt (Zach Roerig) stops him from completely making a fool of himself at the funeral. Looks as though the break up with Liv (Penelope Mitchell) hit him pretty hard, causing him to hit the bourbon even harder. Damon succeeds at his eulogy, but it was Caroline's goodbye that brought a bit of light to a dark occasion. She begins to sing "Go in Peace," to which Stefan begins to have a look of pure infatuation. Jo agrees to giving Kai her magic, but just before he walks away gratefully (and a tad bit cocky), he congratulates his sister on being with child. Turns out her symptoms had nothing to do with his. Alaric (Matt Davis) already planned on asking her to marry him, so what better time to pop the question now? Though still shaken up, she accepts. Welcome to the family Jo!

The funeral really put some things into perspective for the gang, especially Matt. After watching Forbes’ fellow officers pay tribute to her, he was inspired to join the academy. He also suggests that Tyler join as well. Stefan also had a bit of a revelation, when he confesses to Damon that although what he felt wasn't the typical Broadway musical of true love, it is something, and maybe that something is even better.

There’s always something, and for Bonnie this, something is still causing a delay in her return home. Before she could complete the spell, she was transported into another dimension, or in her causes, another prison world. Fortunately, Bonnie is clever enough to realize the northern lights (instead of the usual eclipse) is all linked and continues to do the ritual. Before she heads back, she discovers the second world is the Salvatore house, but in 1706. Another person questions what she is doing there. We find out later it is Damon's mother. But before we play detective, let's just marvel on the plain fact that Bonnie is finally home!

Elena refuses to leave Caroline alone because she knows that in order to get through the pain, she will turn off her humanity switch. Knowing what happened when she did the same, she is determined to not let Caroline go through the same path. But according to Caroline, her mind is already made up.
