'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Episode 16 Recap: "The Downward Spiral"

"Bookmark

In last week’s Vampire Diaries, Caroline’s (Candice Accola) humanity switch is officially off, and of course, the gang is extremely worried. The good news is they can at least enjoy the fact that Bonnie (Kat Graham) is finally back home. Enzo (Michael Malarkey) continues his plan to lure Sarah (Tristin Mays), which seems to be working, since her curiosity of him is his vastly growing. In almost Twilight sort of way, Sarah puts all the clues she’s gathered to find he is a vampire. However, she doesn’t seem to be the least bit intrigued.

Damon(Ian Somerhalder) tries to find out how it’s possible his mother could be stuck in 1903. Since Kai (Chris Wood) is an expert on this sort of thing, he agrees to help, only if Damon can convince Bonnie to see him so he can apologize for everything he’s done. The only reason he even wants to apologize is because he is now linked with Luke’s (Chris Brochu) soul.Credit: CW

Speaking of growing, because Caroline has always been upbeat to which she never let hard situations consume her, turning off her humanity has caused everything she has suppressed to somehow turn her into a passive aggressive, murder hungry (rhymes with the word “witch”) kind of vampire.

Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan, and Bonnie head to a rave to “keep an eye” on Caroline. The only problem with this rescue is they agreed to let her alone for a year. If not, she promises to make their lives miserable. Stefan feels guilty for not telling Caroline the truth of how he feels, and that he is the reason she went off the deep end. When he finally does, it just pisses her off more since it took two years, and the death of her mother for the truth to finally come out.

Bonnie is dealing with some kind of ptsd from being alone for almost a year. Being around tons of people is definitely the last thing she needs and being in the presence of Kai is definitely at the top of the list.

Stefan discovers that he is the emotional trigger to Caroline getting back to her humanity. Unfortunately, his plan to save her falls through when she plots to lure Sarah and kill her. Guess the girl wasn’t bluffing when she said she’d make their life a living hell. She compels Liam (Marco James) to perform amateur surgery on Sarah. Stefan begs her to let her go, but in order to save her life she waivers that shut off his humanity.

Kai refuses to keep his end of the bargain and explains to Damon that he will not help him get his mother back because he is a ripper. Turns out she faked her own death, because she turned in 1858.

Elena finds Sarah just in time, but not fast enough to keep Stefan. I guess we can say he get’s his ripper traits from his mother.
