'The Vampire Diaries' Season Finale Recap: "I'm Thinking of You All The While"

Kai (Chris Wood) is on a complete rampage as we return back to what was Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) and Alaric's (Matt Davis) wedding ceremony. Elena (Nina Dobrev) is critically wounded and Jo doesn't appear to have survived the harsh blow her evil brother impaled upon her. However, instead of actually flying off the handle and wreaking havoc (more than he already has) he does the one thing that his coven could never do: he kills himself. The rule is, if Kai dies, they all die. After having their necks snapped, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) awaken to Enzo (Michael Malarkey) driving them to Lily.

Apparently, Lily  made a deal with Kai, who was supposed to bring her witch friends back with him. Liv (Penelope Mitchell) discovers she is dying, and Tyler (Michael Trevino) discovers the same revelation. Liv offers the notion that the only way for him to save himself is to turn. Just before he agrees, he declares his love to her. Still looking for her "family," Lily reveals to Stefan that, in exchange, she gave Kai her blood, which means he is now a vampire-witch. Devastated by what has happened (considering this always happens to him), Alaric attempts to kill himself. Now that he is in full werewolf mode, Tyler rushes in and attacks Kai.

Although vampire witches are powerful, the bite of a werewolf can kill any supernatural being. The game gets even more twisted when Kai informs Damon (Ian Somerhalder) that he has linked Elena's life to Bonnie's. While Bonnie is still alive, Elena remains in a coma. Since Bonnie is the one who sent him to 1907, he is seeking his revenge in the only way Kai knows how. Matt (Zach Roerig) begs Bonnie to leave town, but Bonnie refuses to leave without a fight.Photo: CW

During the course of her sleep, Elena finds ways to say goodbye to everyone she loves. Caroline questions how Stefan feels about all of this. She worries that because they were once soulmates, he is torn. Stefan reassures her that although they once had a strong love for each other, her faith in his brother was what brought him and Damon back together. Before Bonnie can take him down, clever Kai siphones up Tyler’s blood, causing him to be stronger than ever. Damon steps in, but when Kai points out that poor Bonnie is moments away from dying, he lets off that he chooses Elena instead. Spoiler: Kai does not get off that easy, as he is beheaded when Damon gives off the illusion that he is leaving Bonnie behind.

Unfortunately, that means Elena is gone (well temporarily). Elena will awaken when Bonnie dies (hopefully that will be years from now, for Bonnie’s sake). The group joins together as they link into her memories. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) makes his appearance to say goodbye to his sister, Lily remains confused as to why her friends have not arrived, while Enzo extends his friendship and also finds her missing friends. Damon and Elena then say their final goodbyes as they dance in the spot they first met. Stefan finally reveals to Caroline that he is in love with her. He promises to wait for her until she is ready to open up to him again.

We flash back to what looks like a few years into the future, and Mystic is no longer the semi-happy place we knew a loved. It has become completely torn apart. Matt is now the sheriff and we see Damon standing on the clock tower. Could the loss of Elena been his trigger to go rogue?

It's hard to find the words…say goodbye to Elena one last time by watching next week's #Rehash. #TVD
