‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Episode 13 Recap: “This Woman’s Work”

In last week’s episode, we discovered it was actually Rayna (Veronica Galvez) attacking Stefan (Paul Wesley), not Lily (Annie Wersching). Considering resurrection isn’t exactly foreign in Mystic Falls, it wasn’t a farfetched accusation.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) fills Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in on everything he’s missed while emotionally hiding from the world. Stephan finds Caroline (Candice Accola) in critical condition and compels the doctors to perform an emergency C section. Enzo’s (Michael Malarkey) mysterious plan with Rayna is put on hold when she escapes. In order to get her back, he threatens to tell Bonnie what Damon did to Elena, if she doesn’t deliver Rayna’s sword to him.

So who exactly is Rayna? Flashing back to 1800 something, we see young Rayna being trained by her father. Well aware of vampires, he teachers her to be ready for anything. However, she later finds her father’s life in the balance when Julian (Todd Lasance) compels Rayna to kill her father. This causes her to now be a part of what is called the brotherhood of the five (basically a  gang for vampire hunters). Her spirit becomes linked with the phoenix sword, thus the reason why she is on a rampage at the present moment to get it back.

The twins are forcing themselves to stay inside Caroline in order to keep siphoning her magic. Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and the other heretics attempt to use a spell to channel enough magic to lure them out.  Before the twins can safely be delivered, Beau’s (Jaiden Kaine) scar begins to open. Apparently, any vampire that has been attacked by the Phoenix Sword is permanently linked to Rayna. This will allow her to find any vampire victim of the stone, and also expose other vampires in their path. Nora (Scarlett Byrne) warns Bonnie, hoping she can stop Rayna before she gets to Caroline.

Bonnie urges Stefan to leave Caroline in order to be far away from Rayna. With Nora and Mary Louise gone, Bonnie helps Valerie save Caroline and the twins. Before he can escape, he stops Rayna from killing Damon. This now creates the beginning of Rayna’s obsession to kill Stefan.

The spell is successful and Caroline delivers the twins. Alaric makes it in time to see them being born. Damon goes to find out once and for why Enzo has such an interest with Rayna. According to him, she gave him no choice. Damon is not impressed by his answer, and is ready to kill him for almost getting Stefan killed. Before he does, Enzo reveals that Elena is still alive. The coffin he thought he burned was a dummy coffin.

When Damon receives the great news, he vows to kill Rayna so that Stefan doesn’t have to live in fear. However, Stefan is already gone leaving everything behind, including Caroline, which explains how they eventually come together in the near future.

The question now is how Bonnie and Enzo become an item.
