The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Pennsylvania/Delaware/New Jersey chapter held its 13th Annual Product Parade on Wednesday, October 15 during DesignPhiladelphia week.

Ellen Farber, IIDA Product Parade co-chair said, “In the past, the show has been a commercial interior design industry trade show and networking event. But this year the event joined with DesignPhiladelphia, and as a result, opened its doors to the public for the first time—an industry rarity.”

Since this year’s Product Parade was registered with DesignPhiladelphia, a nine-day annual event hosted by the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, it paved the way to connect the architecture and design community directly to the real estate industry and business owners as well as other end-users who attended. Habitat for Humanity was in attendance, along with the president of a large not-for-profit nursing home, local artists and many more new guests. This is a clear example of how reaching out to a larger audience enabled new connections and partnerships to be achieved.

Cheryl Durst, executive vice president and CEO of IIDA National Headquarters, travels to a lot of trade shows.  This past Product Parade stood out to her because of the tremendous sense of community. “Philadelphia is a great social environment that naturally connects people. It’s an outstanding example of a supportive community. This vibe doesn’t exist elsewhere,” Durst said.   The event provided an informal, but productive way to have the designers see the products. “Dozens of designers came out to the show, and now educating the public with these same resources will be a process and a transition,” added Durst.

The evening started with a booth competition. An impressive group of judges was assembled, including Cheryl Durst, Executive VP and CEO of IIDA HQ, Floss Barber, principal of Floss Barber, Inc., Hilary Jay, Director of the Center for Architecture and DesignPhiladelphia, along with Michelle Ward-Chang, President of IIDA ’s local chapter.  One of the winners of the booth competition is pictured below.
