In today's world, technology is the one thing that can set great businesses apart from the rest. However, if you run a small business, you are probably already overwhelmed with all of the things you have on your plate.

That is why it's crucial to understand how to leverage big data to your advantage. If you don't, your competition will surely get ahead and you could miss out on opportunities to dominate in your industry. So look at these three strategies below and pick at least one to start implementing as soon as possible.

3 Ways to Leverage Big Data In Your Local Business

80/20 Analysis of KPIs

There are probably about 20% of your customers that are generating 80% of your business revenues right now. This is called the 80/20 rule. If you use this information correctly, you can identify which 20% these are and focus solely on them. This allows you to spend less money and make more sales.

In addition, there are key areas that are taking up about 80% of your time, and if you eliminate them you could save energy, time, and money. It could boost your bottom line like never before. The way to achieve this is to leverage your big data.

Within your business, you no doubt have information that you have collected: sales, marketing, conversion rates, expenses, employee performance, etc. By hiring someone to take a look at this data, you can invest in a clear picture of where your energy is going compared to what is actually producing results. Then, armed with this information, you can decide where to place your focus so you aren't working any harder but still managing to get better results.

Predictive Analytics

One of the powerful things about having big data is you can go back in history and look at the facts. Numbers don't lie. And when you have a lot of this information, you can utilize AI and machine learning together with algorithms that predict future behavior.

For instance, say that a certain type of product seems to sell well one month but not the other. Upon deeper review you may find that releasing promotions via email on weekends is better than weekdays for conversions. Then you can use these analytics to predict future sales and better timing for promotions.

Secure Your Network

In today's day and age, with digital technology causing everything to be connected online via the internet, it is important to leverage the data you have to protect it. Knowing how much data should be flowing through your systems, or not, is going to give you an edge over hackers who may want to steal your vital information for competitive purposes or to hold in ransom for big amounts of cash that could disrupt your entire company.

For example, network visibility solutions allow you to see your data as it transfers throughout your entire network. By analyzing this data in real time, you can see if a potential threat is on the horizon. Knowing when a threat is happening and stopping it is a matter of speed. Of course, you cannot react quickly if you don't have the data in the first place. That's why using your big data in a way that allows you to protect your most vulnerable assets such as customer information, proprietary info, or banking information, is crucial. It also saves time and money on needing staff to monitor everything manually.

When it comes to local business, leveraging your information is more important than ever. Long gone are the days where you only had a small flash drive full of information that could run your entire business. Today, the companies that are able to record and analyze their data can put it to use. No matter what size your company, you can use information to grow, to protect vulnerabilities, and to identify key opportunities so you don't miss out on the next big opportunity or fall into a trap.

It’s been quite some time since the Philadelphia Phillies have been known as giants in their field.

For the last number of years, the lack of a proven slugger in the prime of their career has hurt the team significantly.Carlos Santana: The Phillies' Biggest Offseason Signing. Photo: bostonherald.com

However, that is all about to change with their latest acquisition; first baseman Carlos Santana.

Having recently signed a three-year, $60 million contract, Santana joins the Phillies from the Indians after declining their $17.4 million qualifying offer in November. Needless to say, the Tribe’s loss is the Phillies’ gain.

Santana’s power might be attributed to his offseason workouts. A few weeks after the signing, he was proud to show his rather unusual display of strength online. Yes, he actually pushed a car up a slight hill.

Character

The letter Santana wrote to the Indians, the city of Cleveland, and its fans is a testament to his character. This sentiment was recently reinforced by Chris Antonetti, the Indians’ president of baseball operations.

"I think Carlos deserves a tremendous amount of credit for his maturation and his development as a leader and professional," Antonetti said. "Maybe he was a little underappreciated in his time here and all he contributed.

"He's a guy who came over as a very young player in a trade. He was catching at the time we got him. He came to the major leagues as an offensive-minded catcher. He put in a ton of work to grow, mature and evolve into a catcher. Once Yan (Gomes) emerged and moved ahead of Carlos, he enthusiastically changed positions for the betterment of the team whether that was going to third base or first base.

"He was a staple in our lineup, team and organization for the last seven or eight years. We appreciate all the contributions he made not only to the team, but the organization and the broader Cleveland community."

In addition to his great character, he’s got one of the most unique nicknames a ballplayer can have: Slamtana.

Career

During the course of his eight-year career, Santana’s played only nine games against the Phillies, so Philly fans might not be entirely familiar with him—but his penchant for patience at the plate (including two 100-walk seasons) in addition to his home run prowess power and impressive on-base percentage can hopefully rub off on youngsters Rhys Hoskins, Nick Williams, Jorge Alfaro and some of the other Phillies youth. Santana’s final overall numbers in Cleveland speak for itself: 1116 games played, 995 hits, 236 doubles, 174 homers, 587 RBIs, 726 walks, .365 OBP, three postseason appearances. It goes without saying that Phillies’ manager Gabe Kapler’s job will be made easier having someone like Santana he can count on for 20–30 homers a year.

Get Philadelphia Phillies baseball game tickets without service fees to add more to your entertainment.

That’s not all, Santana has been known to create an ambiance of fun and laughter that endears him to his teammates and managers. How that will go in a Kapler-managed clubhouse remains to be seen, but a relaxed atmosphere seems to work best these days, as opposed to the old school baseball mentality. While it’s hard for the Indians to lose him, the Phillies’ lineup got great boost of power. He’ll be a nice addition to a team not quite on the doorsteps of contention, but could be close if they build on their impressive second half on 2017.

So, welcome to the Phillies Slamtana. Whether you’re pushing cars up hills or keeping your team loose, carry a big stick and it should be a fun couple of years with him hitting at Citizens Bank Park.

The retail industry isn't exactly in the best shape.

Sales declined at scores of brick and mortar stores across the United States. The internet has done a lot of damage to the traditional retail establishment, but a bright spot exists. Retail businesses can thrive by embracing technology and online sales. Not every corporation is capable of making the necessary transition, but several do seem to be instituting necessary and effective changes.

Technology, like retail, isn't static. New trends and developments emerge all the time. Keeping a careful eye on emerging retail tech trends allows both industry insiders and consumers to figure out how the changes may affect them.

More and More Digital Tools

Not too surprisingly, 2018 trends indicate digital tools will become a much larger part of the retail market industry. Consumers simply demand an easier time shopping. Advanced digital tools help them get exactly what they want.

Digital advancements now include searching for merchandise through image matching. Instead of typing in the name of a product and hitting the search button, a photo image may be used as the subject of the search. Innovations such as these definitely make the online shopping experience more productive. Sometimes, simply matching an image becomes the easiest way to find what you want.

Facial recognition programs arrived on the scene as well. Consumers looking for both easier purchasing options and enhanced security features should appreciate the arrival of facial recognition systems. Stealing a password isn't always difficult. Matching someone else's face may very well be impossible.

Technology Casts a Net on Atypical Businesses

When retail and technology are mentioned in the same breath, everyone assumes the retail products available for sale are sporting goods, jewelry, clothes, and the like. Food isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind.

The lack of grocery stores and food companies offering direct-to-consumer e-commerce sales contributes to lack of consumer awareness. All that may be changing quite a bit in 2018. New technology makes it easy to use a digital platform to order canned food. So, why wouldn't customers do so?

The arrival and expansion of grocery-related retailers on the e-commerce landscape mean more atypical businesses will debut e-commerce and digital platform sales. To not do so would be to ignore a vital sales and distribution channel. Retailers won't survive much less thrive by ignoring sales channels.

Expediting Customer Service and Delivery

Technological trends yield a ripple effect. Enhanced purchasing options must go hand-in-hand with warehouse fulfillment improvements. Customers do expect that the retailer provides equally fast fulfillment. The processing and shipping of orders cannot occur with any unnecessary delays. Delays mean customers may go elsewhere. So, retailers that greatly improved their digital ordering platforms must work equally hard to eliminate deficiencies in packing and shipping.

Enhancements in Security

Retail and IT trends likely will incorporate advancements in security. Improved security positively must be integrated into the network of any retail giant's computer system. A great many hackers and other malicious intruders would love to breach the security firewalls to abscond with credit card and other private information. Retail companies do invest a lot in security, but hackers can be incredibly successful due to relentlessness.

Even with the help of the greatest security experts in the industry, retailers still find themselves at risk. Therefore, constantly staying on top of security improvements must remain a top priority. Look for new and more sophisticated security technology to emerge. Security improvements do come with costs. Retailers must accept those costs because the alternative could lead to a looming public relations disaster.

A Better Retail World

Both the retail industry and its customers benefit greatly from new technology. Embracing technology becomes unavoidable for both. Progress in all areas of industry and life cannot be ignored. Progress in retail technology marches on.

Venture capital is a risky business. Few would argue that putting money into startups or funneling money into private enterprises comes with any guarantees. Yet, billions of dollars flow annually into the global venture capital industry.

Why would anyone wish to put personal or business funds into a venture capital investment? The potential to draw a tremendous return on investment motivates the risk taking. Gaining better returns than what would be the case in the bond market or stock market serves moves money in venture How Cloudamize Yielded 52% a Year for Local Philadelphia Investorscapitalists’ direction.

Some investors have made huge profits directing money into venture capital. In Philadelphia, there exists one of the greatest storybook examples of achieving a fantastic return on investment.

The Philadelphia Story

A recent purchase of the company Cloudamize led to investors receiving an astounding 52% return. To say that is a rare number would be an incredible understatement. Few investors ever come close to 10% much less 52%. The investors in Philadelphia joined the exclusive club of successful venture capitalists. In fact, they are now basking in significant media attention thanks. Hopefully, their good fortune will continue and the annual returns will also prove to be stellar ones.

The United Kingdom-based company Cloudreach made the purchase, which took profits over the top. A common exit strategy for many businesses is to boost value tremendously and then sell. Cloudamize has not been fully sold, but the sale of controlling interest was more than enough to give investors what they sought. 52% is likely far more than they ever believed possible.

Even the smartest minds in the financial world wouldn't believe a 52% return would be possible. Yet, the figure is accurate and investors have the net worth to prove it.

What Service Is Offered?

Cloudamize provides a service that many people find incredibly valuable. The company focuses on cloud infrastructure analytics. And you need to make sure you get the best training consultants in the industry because even the best find it challenging to explain all the intricacies of this type of work.

The company produces a software program designed to arrive at the analytical reports. The well-crafted analytics tell clients everything they need to know to migrate and manage a cloud infrastructure. This, in turn, should hopefully make running the cloud infrastructure much easier.

Businesses long discovered the vital importance of a cloud infrastructure system. The benefits of a cloud system are enormous. The lack of constructing a physical infrastructure on the business' premises would be among the most obvious positives. The cost of creating and managing an infrastructure can be enormous. With the arrival of cloud infrastructures, doing so has become unnecessary.

Security concerns weigh heavily on the minds of business owners whose companies require a network infrastructure. Cloud-based systems may contain far better security and protections than would be the case with a physical one. Anything that improves security remains a net positive.

Of course, a lot of effort must go into the management of an infrastructure. A lot of the work is turned over to the cloud host. The client is not completely absolved of duties. Through utilizing an effective analytics software program, the client’s duties become easier to manage. Cloudamize seems to deliver on expectations for those clients relying on it.

No Easy Investment Opportunities

That 52% number really does capture attention. People invest money in order to make more of it. 52% absolutely reflects a generous return and should motivate people to look closer at venture capital. Would-be investors, however, do need to look at venture capital investments with their eyes wide open. In other words, don't assume all investments ventures are likely to be this wildly successful.

Traveling for work can be tedious, but a well planned trip can take some of the monotony and some of the stress away. Once the big decisions have been made, you may find that the business trip feels a little more like a working vacation.

Just Like A Boy Scout, Always Be Prepared

Enjoying a business trip begins before the flight takes off. Preparation is the key, especially in circumstances when bosses and co-workers will be observing your business trip etiquette. Taking the time to map out your routes, double checking your hotel and car rental reservations, and setting an extra alarm can all go a long way to ensure you won't miss any important meetings.

We all know that any number of things can go wrong on a vacation away from home. This is especially true, when it comes to business trips. Expect the worst and prepare for mishaps, because, sooner or later, you will need that fall-back plan.

When packing, there are some things you should make a note to bring that you might not otherwise consider. For instance, bringing earphones is essential. Even on the plane, the in-flight movie might not have an option for video captioning services, so those earphones or earbuds will already come in handy.

Another option is a pack of cards. This might help pass the time on a flight or while killing time in your hotel room, prior to a meeting. Of course, a smartphone equipped with gaming apps could provide much more enjoyable entertainment in those circumstances. Bring clothes appropriate for a number of atmospheres. Foremost, you'll want to ensure you have multiple changes of business attire for meetings and business related events, but you won't be spending every moment in meetings. Bring casual (but not frumpy) clothes for dinners and evening outings to ensure an appearance that won't spur rumors in the office back home.

One additional word on wardrobe: taking the time to check weather forecasts for your destination will help to ensure you bring clothes appropriate for the climate.

Technology Is Your Greatest Tour Guide

Making the most of your business trip starts with familiarizing yourself with your employer's policy in regard to business expenses. Knowing just what is permitted will undoubtedly save you from spending your own money, while away from the office. Additionally, it's wise to save digital records of your expenses, as well as paper receipts. There are even a number of mobile apps to help out in this area by allowing a user to scan a copy of the record and save it on their phone. The days of burying one's nose in an atlas or trying desperately to flag down a cabbie on a busy street are all but gone. There isn't much a smartphone can't do these days. From GPS services to ridesharing apps, mobile devices can provide travelers with everything to ensure a successful and stress-free experience on the road.

Stay loyal to those businesses that treat you well and you'll find that they will return the favor. From airlines and car rental companies to hotels and restaurants, many businesses offer rewards programs for loyal customers. By frequenting the same places over time, you will be able to stack up points good towards free or discounted services. Later, a personal vacation may be all but paid for from your company business trips.

Don't forget to have fun on your business trip, too! Apps like Tripadvisor and websites like Roadside America can offer options for enjoying your free time and spending evenings away from the hotel. Heading out for a concert or a sightseeing excursion may even afford an opportunity for bonding with coworkers and colleagues. At the very least, it will give you something to talk about, when you do return home.

Remember, planning ahead is essential to a successful and enjoyable business trip, so take care of everything early. Traveling can be frustrating enough without the added stress of worrying over poorly organized plans.

There are many people who are interested in running their own business. A business gives you a lot of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. If you are successful, you can change your financial life forever. In the market today around Philadelphia, there are a lot of companies that are earning more money than ever before. Here are some of the profitable companies and industries in the city of Philadelphia.

Pet Stores

Although it sounds odd, pet stores are thriving right now. There are basically two reasons for this growth. People are willing to spend a lot of money on their pets, even if it is a luxury purchase. In addition, the margins on pet products are really high. This means that the companies selling the products make a lot of money on each sale. This is a trend that is expected to continue in the future. Not only are people owning more pets, but they are spending much more than people of previous generations. This is a great thing for pets, and a great thing for people who own pet stores.

Food Service

The restaurant industry is in a steep decline right now, especially in urban areas. Young people today do not like to go out and sit for hours at a restaurant. They would rather spend their time and money on things that add more value to their life. This is one of the reasons why food service companies are starting to become a powerhouse in Philadelphia and other major cities. With all of the changes going on, many people are excited for the future. Food service trucks are in many parts of the city, and the food is generally healthy and tasty. In the coming years, many industry experts expect that this trend is going to continue.

Law Firms

A discussion about profitable companies would not be complete without mentioning law firms. There are a lot of great law firms in the city of Philadelphia, and most of them are doing really well financially right now. With all of the changes that go on in the industry every year, you need to have a solid lawyer on your side who can keep up and fight for you.

Divorce attorneys are one of the most common services right now. Although the divorce rate is lower than it has been in many years, there are still a lot of marriages that end in divorce. With all of the changes that need to take place when this happens, a solid divorce lawyer can be a huge value to people in all situations.

Dentists

There are a lot of people who are now spending a lot of time and money on their oral health. With all of the new technology that is available in this industry, it is really amazing what a quality dentist can do. There are many changes that can take place in a short period of time with your mouth. Now is the time to start looking and making changes if that is the path you want to take.

Not only are dentists expensive, but they are usually really busy throughout the year. A dentist office that provides quality work is going to have more clients than they can handle. This results in a lot of sales and profits for people within the industry who do a great job. In Philadelphia, the dental industry is one of the most profitable to be in.

Final Thoughts

Overall, running any business is going to take a lot of time and money. There are many people who are interested in running their own business, but few people have the experience to do so. With all of the changes going on in the business industry, now is the time to look at various options that will work.

Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love. It is gaining the reputation of a fast growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. As a diverse city, it is home to innovative science and information technology (IT) startups. Progressive Policy Institute, a non-profit organization, and Telnet, an IT solutions consulting firm, are responsible for creating a report on startups around the country. Philadelphia is taking homage as one of 25 Emerging Startup Hubs in the U.S. Here are some of the startups that are responsible for Philadelphia gaining this status:

LIA Diagnostics

LIA Diagnostics founding date is 2015. Their workflow process believes that women should design for women. It also believes that a product should be safe for the environment. This is developing a new type of pregnancy test. You can administer this test in the privacy of your home. There is one thing that makes it different from other types of tests. You will be able to flush the kit down the toilet. Also, the test is a paper product, so it is easy to fold. As a result, this will prevent any privacy issues in the future.

The developers of this product were in a master's program for the Integrated Product Design at the University of Pennsylvania. For their final project, they were looking for an eco-friendly device. After deciding on a medical device, they chose the pregnancy test.

LIA Diagnostics are winners of the U.S. Small Business Administration's InnovateHER: 2015 Innovating for Women Business Challenge. They were also the receivers of the DreamIt Ventures accelerator program. This test is in the beta stage. They are predicting that sales of this product will start in 2017.

Oncora Medical

Oncora Medical was found in 2014. It develops software to help radiation oncologists fight cancer. Their product is a tool, which uses data to assist radiation oncologists in making decisions about patient care. In the past, radiation oncologists did not have access to large amounts of previous data. Today, they will be able to access the research and treatment plans from other oncologists.

The initial founder of Oncora Medical is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. While training with a radiation oncologist, many issues were brought to light. After seeing the limitation of access to data, the creation of Oncora Medical was put into motion. Oncora Medical is now offering services to radiation oncologists.

The One Health Company

The One Health Company provides treatment for animals with serious diseases. Their starting date is 2014. The startup is a clinical trial network. They use the same medicine that treats humans with certain types of illnesses. Some of these conditions are bone cancer and lymphoma.

Board Certified Veterinarians administer these medications to the animals. The animals stay at home with their caregivers. Their owners bring them to the clinic for their treatments. The use of treatment data is for future care of animals and humans. The mission of One Health Company is to help humans and animals. During previous trials, 6 million animals were needing treatment.

HomeGrown Farms

Three friends found HomeGrown Farms in 2014. Their mission is to grow vegetables minus the pesticides and herbicides. They eliminate all bugs and other kinds of pests that ruin crops. They accomplish this task by keeping the vegetables in a closed area. Constant lighting makes the vegetables grow. Additionally, a certain amount of water is important for the plants. This startup will bring vegetables to your door. They do not require a minimum order. All of their vegetables are available year-round. HomeGrown Farms is the winner of the 2016 Philly Mag's The Pitch competition. They donate vegetables to local food banks. They also team up with nonprofit organizations to provide training to farmers.

Philadelphia is one of the fastest growing entrepreneurial ecosystems in the U.S. It is providing opportunities for new startups in the area. These new startups will provide jobs and more revenue for the city.

Are you long overdue for a family vacation? Ready for the sun and fun of Southern California but worried that you can't afford it? Travelling isn't just for the wealthy. Stop California dreaming and read on to discover how you can have the family trip of a lifetime on a shoestring budget.

Frugal FlyingSouthern California: Are you long overdue for a trip?

Making the hop from Philadelphia to Southern California doesn’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of options online where you can find discount tickets if you’re willing to think outside the box a bit. A nearby airport may also have a less expensive option! Trenton-Mercer Airport (TNN/KTTN) is only 43 miles from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Atlantic City International Airport (ACY/KACY) is 58 miles away. Web sites like SkyScanner let you choose from any number of different airports nearby and compare costs.

A quick search for flights leaving tomorrow show round-trip tickets for as low as $360! Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays are the most cost effective days to travel. Rumor has it that booking flights late Monday night will get you cheaper flights as well.

Affordable Accommodations

Thrifty travellers know that the best way to avoid sticker shock when finding a hotel is to plan in advance. Do your homework. Web sites like TripAdvisor and HipMunk have tons of choices. You can filter by price and location, and read reviews to determine which one is the right fit for you and your family. Also, don’t rule out Airbnb. Their website has an abundance of options for families, with ratings, so you can find a place to stay that is right for you. Book online in advance to avoid the headache of scrambling to find a hotel when you land. Your wallet and your sanity will thank you!

Comfort Cuisine

California might have a reputation as the kale capital of the world, but you can still find some good old fashioned Philadelphia comfort food on the West Coast. Cortina’s Italian Market has multiple locations and serves up a tasty Philly cheesesteak. ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney boasts a delectable steak sandwich too, along with other delicious fare. If you’re missing soft pretzels, head to Slater’s 50/50 where they’ve fashioned the iconic snack into homemade burger bread. Wash it down with their signature Bananas Foster milkshake for an out-of-this-world experience!

Economical Entertainment

What’s the first thought in your mind when arriving in Southern California? Disneyland! A visit to Mickey and his friends can cost you some big bucks.

Fortunately, you can still find cheap Disneyland tickets if you try. Start by going online and finding a reputable ticket provider. There are several that work directly with Disney to offer legitimate discounted tickets. Avoid buying any Disneyland tickets from people selling them on the side of the road or from places like Craigslist or eBay. These tickets are part of a common scam that tells you that you can “rent” tickets. You can’t rent tickets and will be charged full price for admission if you try to enter the park. Another way to get inexpensive Disneyland tickets is to avoid days when the entry fee to the park is likely to be the highest, such as national holidays, school breaks and weekends.

Had your fill of Disneyland? Southern California has countless family friendly options. A very popular one that's also wallet friendly is K1Speed. Have some friendly competition and get your adrenaline going! You can also take your family exploring some of Southern California’s most breathtaking National Parks. It’s a budget way to see some amazing nature and get a little exercise in too!

An amazing vacation to Southern California is doable for you and your family! It just takes a little bit more work ahead of time. Keep an eye out for discounts and pounce on them when you find one that matches your interests and budget. You’ll save money, and as a result, it will be easier to enjoy your California getaway!
