Students Run Philly Style Celebrate Their Mentors with April 17th Gener8tion Run and Other Events

With the great weather lately, people are heading out to local parks to run and soak up the sun. TStudents Run Philly Stylehere is a special group in Philly whose aim is to learn to run and become better athletes, build camaraderie, achieve goals, and have a good time while learning. This group is full of Philadelphia’s school kids and they are Students Run Philly Style.

This weekend they are taking it to the park to run in Gener8tion Run, a run celebrating ‘who you are’ and who has influenced the runners. Students Run Philly Style is the only program in Philadelphia that offers marathon training to help young people succeed in their goals in life. They do this by connecting students with adult mentors who help them dream and accomplish goals beyond their imagination, including the completion of a marathon. Based on a similar initiative in Los Angeles (Students Run LA), the program delivers powerful results for youth, including increasing high school graduation rates, improving health, providing safe choices after school and developing positive relationships with caring adults.

Many of Philly’s schoolkids are overweight, and this program gets them off the couch, out of the house and pounding the pavement. The admin and mentors at Students Run Philly Style have the kids ‘on the streets’ in a good way- they have a safe after school activity that keeps them in shape, and also to do well in school. As Heather McDanel, director, has said, “After completing a marathon, getting an A on a test doesn’t seem so impossible anymore! The self-esteem, goal-setting and discipline our youth learn through running translates into improved performance in the classroom.” McDanel has worked with inner city youth for 8-9 years, and enjoys the work she does with the kids of Philly. “Many of the kids who graduate out of the program come back to the group to offer support and become mentors,” she adds.

On Saturday, April 17, runners and walkers from all over the Philly area to run the 8K or walk the .8K for gener8tion run, a family festival that celebrates those important people who have encouraged or supported the runners and their families. Gener8tion Run is a fundraising event that helps the young runners go further! With 600 students and over 150 mentors, this is a team that will go far- in distance, speed and successes.

The 8K starts at 3pm and the .8K walk begins right after the 8K start in Fairmount Park in front of the Please Touch Museum. And, the Health & Wellness Fair offers plenty to do from 1-5.pm.
