President Obama Shouldn't Get a Free Pass on Election Day Because of Hurricane Sandy

"Bookmark

As many continue to sort through the debris and destruction of Hurricane Sandy, the Presidential election carries on.  It’s the first time in my 26 years of life that I can remember a natural disaster hitting this close to the national election, and on Tuesday, the country will find out how it will be affected.

Rather than the election discussion being centered around the issues that have dominated the national debate, focus has been on the President Obama’s handling of national government services to help those states most affected by the storm.

Will the President’s adept handling of this crisis work to his advantage?  It will certainly distract some voters. But the most important issue facing voters still remain which is the President’s record on the economy.

Governor Chris Christie has come under scrutiny (i.e. Rush Limbaugh) from his own party over his praise of the President’s assistance with New Jersey during Sandy.  This shouldn’t distract the Republican party or moderate voters from continuing to question the President on the issues discussed before Hurricane Sandy hit which are national unemployment and getting Americans back to work.

In the next 72 hours, both parties need to stick to what has worked for them through the campaign season.  Republicans should continue to hammer the President’s record on the economy, and the Democrats should continue highlighting the successes of the President’s first four years.

And voters should cast their votes for the next President based on these records, not on one isolated event.
