Teen pregnancy is a term used to a situation where a girl gets pregnant before she attains the legal adulthood age. This is a problem being experienced all over the world, and it is not a preserve of the underdeveloped countries only. Statistics shows that at least 34% of teenagers still get pregnant in the U.S every year. These figures are shocking, which is one of the highest records amongst developed countries. Teenagers need to be told the whole truth about the risks involved with being pregnant at under age. It is important to note that teenage mothers are more prone to pregnancy complications compared to mature women above the age of 20. They are likely to experience anemia, high blood pressure and sometimes premature labor. Babies born out of teenage mothers are also likely to be underweight and with other developmental issues.


How to prevent teenage pregnancy


The first responsibilities of every parent is to talk with their kids about matters sexuality at an early age. This is one thing that most parents fear, but it is critical. Almost 82% of the pregnancies among teens is unintended and, therefore, can be prevented through sexual education. As a teen, the only sure way of getting pregnancy prematurely is through abstinence. By abstaining, you don't need to worry about the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections. Without abstinence, one should always use contraceptives during sex.

Children born to teenage mothers are more prone to abuse and neglect by both the mother and the society. In Philadelphia, a staggering 70% of teen parents drop out of school in 2010 alone. They create a vicious cycle that is also followed by their children.
