The Omelette Friday April 8, 2011 Weekly Roundup

Phillies Clobber Mets 11-0

The Phillies destroyed the Mets 11-0 behind an offensive juggernaut yesterday. They didn't even need Roy Halladay yesterday, who pitched seven great innings. The Phillies' offense was so good that they managed to get a leadoff hitter on base in each of the first seven innings. The Phillies head to Atlanta as Cliff Lee will take the hill against Tim Hudson tonight. So far so good for the 2011 Phillies, who had many questions heading into the season.

U.S. Government Shutdown 2011 Hours Away

The deadline for the shutdown of the Federal Government is just hours away. Should the shutdown go down, it will have a big impact on the economy. The Washington Post has a full breakdown of what the U.S. Government Shutdown will mean for many people. Many government workers won't get paid and it could affect government contractors as well. Also, National Parks services will be shutdown. Really any non-essential services will cease during the shutdown. What this means for the economy is many government workers won't be getting paid. The effects from that are pretty obvious. Should the shutdown go down, it will be a black eye for the Republicans and give a huge edge to President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign.

Allen Iverson Flips Out on Cops During Traffic Stop

Allen Iverson is back in the news and not for good news. A car he rode in was stopped by police in Atlanta after changing lanes without signaling. The driver of the car (a Lamborghini) failed to produce to the proper documentation. Then Iverson interjected and stated, "Take the vehicle, I have 10 more," "Police don't have anything else (expletive) to do except (expletive) with me, I make more money than you will in 10 years" and "Do you know who I am?" The cops then discovered the tags on the Lamborghini were expired. The car was towed and Iverson did actually apologize. On a side note, it's pretty amazing that Iverson is riding around in a Lamborghini with the financial problems he has. It was well-documented that he was nearly broke, which is why he was playing in Turkey.

Glenn Beck, Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, and Meredith Vieira All Could Be Leaving TV Gigs

Glenn Beck announced he's leaving Fox at the end of June. But, there is nothing concrete on Matt Lauer or Katie Couric just yet. According to TMZ Matt Lauer doesn't "really" want to leave NBC, but he's threatening to leave if he doesn't get $25 million per year. Meredith Vieira reportedly is definitely leaving the Today Show. As far as Katie Couric's status, she reportedly will leave in June when her contract is up. This could open the door for a Katie Couric - Matt Lauer reunion.
