Harold Camping's May 21st Doomsday Scam, Roy Halladay Steps Up For Phillies, and John Street Contemplating Run For Mayor

The Omelette Saturday May 21, 2011 "Doomsday Edition"

Harold Camping's May 21st Doomsday Scam

Today is the day the world will end according to Harold Camping. When you dig a little further you'll see this so-called Doomsday prophecy is nothing more than a publicity stunt marketed by Harold Camping's Family Radio station, which was worth $117 million in 2008. Camping bases his prediction of the May 21, 2011 date on a calculation using references in the Bible. Most notably Genesis Genesis 7:4 (“Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth”) and 2 Peter 3:8 (“With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”) are at the heart of the calculation.

Critics will call the May 21 Doomsday prediction an "epic fail", but it was never taken seriously to begin with. One has to wonder what Camping will do to cover his rear-end, when this doomsday scenario falls through. He has done an effective job putting himself and his radio station in the spotlight, but that could go to waste when his followers (many of whom quit their jobs) feel duped. At the end of the day Camping and his followers will look like bumbling fools when Judgment Day turns out to be a dud.

Roy Halladay Steps up For Phillies in 3-2 Victory Over Rangers

The Phillies hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Rangers last night at The Bank, behind Roy Halladay's stellar pitching and two Phillies homeruns. There was even a Ben Francisco sighting, as he accounted for one of the Phillies' homeruns. Cliff Lee will take the hill for the Phillies against his former squad tonight at 7:10.

John Street Contemplating Run For Mayor As An Independent

Yep, you are not seeing things. Former Philadelphia Mayor John Street is contemplating a serious run for Mayor this fall against Michael Nutter. But, this time he'll run as an independent. He has had run-ins with Michael Nutter many times over the years. It's no secret that they don't care for one another. And, Street would love to stick it to Nutter this time around. Fact of the matter is, Street was a horrendous Mayor, arguably the worst in Philadelphia's history. The only people who would probably vote for Street are his loyalists and people who don't know any better.

Street has dodged the legal bullet many times in his career and it's a miracle that he is not in Federal Prison. Street's corruptive practices are well-documented over the years.  It seems whereever John Street goes, the Feds follow. Just recently he and his fellow PHA board members were forced out by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development after massive amounts of corruption were discovered. And, Street was under investigation for allegations that he awarded contracts to a lawfirm his son worked at! John Street is a leopard that will never change it's spots. Then again, maybe it's a good thing that Street will run for Mayor. Should he win, it stands to reason he'll engage in some sort of backroom dealings and then finally justice will be served.
