Groundhog Day 2012 Marks Punxsutawney Phil's Day to Shine in Punxsutawney, PA

So far the weather has been anything but winter-like in the Philadelphia area. Temperatures have soared into the 60's over the past few days. Alas, Groundhog Day 2012 is here - the day when thousands descend upon the town of Punxsutawney, PA to eat, drink, and wait for Punxsutawney Phil to declare whether or not we'll have six more weeks of winter or not.

Punxsutawney, PA is in the middle of nowhere and home to just over 6,000 residents. But on Groundhog Day it might as well be Penn's Landing on New Year's Eve as people come in droves to celebrate this annual tradition, which was started by German settlers. This marks the 122nd year that Punxsutawney Phil has made a weather prognostication on Groundhog Day.

UPDATE: Punxsutawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter. Considering this "winter" has been anything like winter, does that mean we'll finally have cold weather for a prolonged period of time? Not according to the 10-day weather report from weather.com. Temps are expected to be above-average through next week.
