The Supreme Court Must Silence the Westboro Baptist Church

The religious cult known as The Westboro Baptist Church has it's day in court today when The Supreme Court of The United States will decide whether or not they have the right to protest at gay soldiers' funerals. Philly2Philly.com's Erik Uliasz wrote about the Westboro Baptist Church several months ago and eloquently broke down why they should not receive First Amendment protection. Yours truly couldn't agree more.

One man got fed up with Reverend Fred Phelps' herd of mindless trogladytes and sued the organization. Now, the case has headed to The Supreme Court. Albert Snyder filed the lawsuit against The Westboro Baptist Church in March 2006 after the ideologues protested the funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq. Snyder ultimately won the lawsuit. Now the Supreme Court must decide if they have a right to protest at soldiers' funerals.

The Westboro Baptist Church should be silenced for several reasons. This isn't a case of free speech, but the case of a group of religious phanatics looking to disgrace a private religious ceremony. It's about time The Supreme Court sends a message to extremist religious organizations who disrupt private functions hiding under the guise of free speech.

The reality is the members of the Westboro Bapist Church are nothing more than bottom-feeding ideological terrorists who masquerade as champions for free speech. The so-called church's lawyer (Fred Phelps' daughter) Margie Phelps argues that this religious cult holds the protests to illustrate their point that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are punishment for Americans' immorality, including the tolerance of homosexuality and abortion. Therefore, these protests should be protected under the First Amendment.

This is a weak argument at best. I'll throw out these examples. We as Americans have the right to say anything we want in this country. You can even say you want to assassinate the President, but you will pay the price. Just like you can drop the N-bomb on the radio if you're a talkshow host (i.e. Dr. Laura). But, you will pay the price. Or in the case of one Rick Sanchez, you can say the Jews control the media, but you'll be silenced and rightfully so because it's a stupid thing to say.

If the Supreme Court allows this nonsense to continue, then what is to stop Al Qaeda supporters from holding protests on our soil, which call for the "death of America?"

We can only hope that better judgement prevails and The Supreme Court rules against the Westboro Baptist Church of Mindless Sheep and silences them once and for all.
