MIA Middle Finger At Madonna Super Bowl Halftime Show Should Be Irrelevant

Today the big story about the Super Bowl isn't the fact that Eli Manning most likely punched his ticket to Canton with a 2nd Super Bowl victory and also his second Super Bowl MVP award. The big story isn't how the Giants have more championships in the past five years than all four Philadelphia sports franchises have in 25 years combined. The big story is certainly not about why the Philadelphia Eagles should be embarrassed by the Giants' 2nd Super Bowl victory.

The big story isn't about Clint Eastwood's amazing Chrysler Super Bowl commerical either.

No instead, people are talking about Madonna's halftime show and how MIA "upstaged" it by giving a middle finger to the camera. She also allegedly appeared to mouth the words "I don't give a f**k."

Raise your hand if you actually saw this on TV.

Thought so. For the very few who actually witnessed this live, it happened so quickly that it barely registered.

Then, why is this story receiving so much attention? Already people are up in a tizzy over this and ready to call this Janet Jackson Part II. Instead it's an irrelevant story getting a lot of attention. In summary, the MIA middle finger "moment" is certainly not shocking and should be rendered a non-story.

Naturally NBC is scared to death over M.I.A.'s middle finger "malfunction" and issued an apology immediately: "The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans," said Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL, which produced Madonna's halftime show.

The NFL is blaming this "atrocity" on a failure in NBC’s delay system for allowing the gesture to be seen. Spokesman Brian McCarthy said M.I.A. did not do anything similar during rehearsals and the league had no reason to believe she would pull something like that during the actual show.

All of the bible bangers, right-wing nutjobs, family advocates, and protectors of the children are sure to be crawling out of the woodwork over this. They'll demand MIA be burned to the stake and that NBC receive heavy fines over this Godless act.

Here's what I have to say to any offended people out there. Get over it. It was quick shot of someone flipping the bird. Big deal. You see it every day when you're out driving when some maniac cuts off a driver. I'm certain your kids see it in elementary and middle school, or after school when they're out on the playground.

In the P.C. culture we live in, people are more concerned over a "moment" like this then they are with real issues, which have a detrimental impact on society such as the record-breaking murders and assaults happening in Philadelphia this year.

Or, perhaps these people should wake up to the fact that cities like Detroit, Pontiac, Camden, and Reading, PA are urban wastelands rife with drug use, violence, and decay.

Maybe they should take note how many people are out of work and losing their homes at record rates.

Now, those are some issues to be angry about.
