Welcome back to the Eagles Jeff Garcia

“Who’d have thought they’d lead ya…back here where we need ya.  Yeah we tease him a lot but we got him cause we’ve got him on the spot welcome back.”

Yes, these are the lyrics to the famed 70’s TV show “Welcome Back Kotter” and when songwriter John Sebastin wrote this hit jingle, I’m fairly certain he didn’t have Jeff Garcia in mind but the lyrics are pretty appropriate.  Jeff Garcia is back in Eagle green for at least a week,… maybe longer?

With the rib injury to Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick not being eligible until Week 3, the Birds went out and signed veteran Jeff Garcia who led them to playoff success in 2006 and has been a star and Pro Bowler throughout his NFL career.  When Garcia was behind center in 2006, the Eagles had a fight they have seldom had and it was this fiery leader who may sometimes be “Short” on talent but is never short on courage.  Jeff Garcia is a winner and it is good to have him back but with his signing, there are many questions that are left unanswered.

The first question would be why did Oakland cut him in the first place?  The Raiders went out and signed Garcia to give Jamarcus Russell a run for his money and not only to Russell maintain his starting position, Garcia was released and while this may raise some eyebrows, you need to remember this is a Raiders organization which is far from stable.

The next question would be why didn’t Carolina or San Francisco sign the well-travelled veteran?  Garcia gained fame in San Fran after proving himself in the CFL and he seems like the type of guy Mike Singletary would love to employ?  As for Carolina, with the questionable play of Jake Delhomme, it seemed all but certain that Garcia would be in Panther Blue but once again, we were wrong.  Instead of Garcia, the Panthers signed A.J. Feeley who Philadelphia cut at the end of preseason.  Weird…it would seem that way.

So with Mike Vick almost ready to suit up and Kevin Kolb being a young quarterback the Birds spent a second round draft choice on, where does Jeff Garcia fit in?  The answer may be under center.

While everyone seems to still stand behind Donovan McNabb and the world of the NFL was sent upside down with the signing of Vick and the huge investment the Birds made in Kolb, could Jeff Garcia somehow, someway be the man who leads us to the promise land?  If this is to happen, is there a better story than Jeff Garcia coming off of the waiver wire and becoming the leader of a team which is now the odds on favorite to win the NFC?  I really don’t have the answers but I can tell you this much, with all of the fanfare that surrounds the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback position, it is great to see the undersized fireball named Garcia in Eagle green and it would be even better if it was a man named Jeff who brought the Philadelphia fans a much deserved Super Bowl Ring.

“Who’d have thought they’d lead ya back here where we need ya?”  While the grammar may not be great, the chemistry may be incredible. Welcome back Jeff Garcia.  I hope to see you on Feb. 7, 2010 in Miami.
