The Morning After- Eagles Lose to the Cowboys

"Bookmark

Morning campers,

I trust everyone had a safe and happy New Year's holiday. I was fortunate to have the week off to spend with my sexy and beautiful wife and two precocious kids...

tma

However, this is a very bitterseweet Morning After for yours truly as today I am embarking on a new and exciting journey in my career yet have that unmistakable taste of disgust in my mouth following yesterday's "game."

A DAY NOT FIT FOR A KING...
I would swear if I didn't know any better, I would think Martin Luther King Jr. was speaking of Eagles' fans when he said the following:

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

Eagles fans have been accepting disappointment, finite or otherwise, since 1960 yet collectively we never lose hope, be it of the infinite variety or not. Of course after 50 years, hope is pretty much all we have...

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK...
In a span of about 4 seconds Joe Buck went from calling the Cowboys new stadium a "monstrosity" to "breathtaking"...So what you're saying Joe is it's quite hideous but in an astonishing sort of way. Ok, now I get it...

I FEEL A DRAFT...
Not exactly CNN Breaking News worthy, at least it shouldn't be to any right-minded Eagles fan but in the next NFL Draft, it would be wise for the Eagles to concentrate on those youngsters who play on the defensive side of the ball...particulaly tdick butkushose who play safety and linebacker and perhaps take a good hard look at any very large, make that enormous, defensive tackles...

Yes, Stewart Bradley is badly missed but... c'mon kids, it's not like he was Dick Butkus or anything. The kid was coming into his own for sure but his return alone will surely not cure all that ails the Eagles Defense.

For the record, I do not think Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott is in over his head, as many of my brethren do... I do think he has experienced growing pains over the course of the season and that was to be expected but when Bradley went down and #20 went west...judge smails

And speaking of B Dawk, can we all stop once and for all the talk that Quentin Mikell would become the next Brian Dawkins. Hell, I'd take Darryl Dawkins out there on some plays. At least I know Chocolate Thunder would try and make a tackle now and then... And Sean Jones and Macho Man? Yeah well, as Judge Smails said, the world needs ditch diggers, too.

BABY YOU CAN DRIVE MY KARR...
So there I was, minding my own business at my brother Michael's fesitve holiday gathering when out of nowhere comes the former President of the Lito Sheppard Fan Club, one Thomas (Tommy) Karr.

Like Rosie O'Donnell making her way to the buffet line, he pushed women and children out of his way... like John Travolts, he juked and jived his way across the floor... all in an effort to get to where he wanted to go... AKA right where I was standing.

Before I could even get an obligatory holiday greeting out, the verbal assault was launched...

"Why are you so negative in your column? The Eagles are playing great and all I read about is how bad they are! Whywiffleball can't you write something positive?"

Personally I think this all goes back to the time I struck him out three times playing Wiffeball but... to appease Mr. Karr and those like him, I am officially announcing a new feature of the TMA...

The TK Feel Good Fact of the Game
Today, I will give you not one, but TWO TKFGFGs...

1. The Eagles Offensive Line- for the most part, played its collective arses off... They continually provided Donnie Mac with ample time to find an open receiver. It wasn't their fault that Don either made a poor throw or the receiver simply dropped the ball.

2. Brent Celek- He clearly held his own against the more-celebrated Jason Witten. And speaking of the Dallas TE, a note to former Cowboys QB and current Fox color dude Troy Aikman... Troy, buddy... ease up on the Witten love next time.

LAUGH YOUR HEAD OFF...
Is there anything more transparent or more laughable than the commercials the NFL is running re: concussioconcussionsns?

Oh, how great it is they are so concerned for their players' well-being. They really do have the players' best interests at heart.

Yeah, and I'm Buck Naked and I'm a porno star...

I would rather the NFL run a commercial in which an NFL executive comes onscreen and tells us he wishes it was like the old days when players would take a few hundred aspirin and go right back in the game. Who cares if he doesn't know his own name 10 years from now? Just get back in there and bust some heads!

WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE...
Some of you may have missed this and I only heard it in my car on my way home from MQs house...

Eagles Pro Bowl FB Leonard Weaver was being interviewed after the game and he had this to say in response to one question...

(paraphrasing) "Well, we knew we were in the playoffs anyway, so we knew we would be playing next week... don't worry, we'll get 'em next game."mailman

And there you have it kids... where do you think Lenny picked this mindset up from, his mailman?

It starts at the top and trickes down. No, I have no proof whatsoever Andy Reid had this mindset going into the game but... it does not take a rocket scientist to know that the Eagles M.O. under Reid in big, crucial games has been to play with a complete lack of urgency and a complete lack of apparent preparation more often than not...

DID YOU NOTICE?...
*For the most part, Cowboys pass rushing wiz  was a non-factor?
*The Eagles Defensive Line continually was manhandled by the Cowboys OL, save for few meaningless series in the 4Q?
*In 21 possessions in 2 games against the Cowboys, the Eagles have scored a grand total of 1 TD? (Thankstimeout to my man Ray Didinger for sharing that on the Post Game Show)
*How costly the timeout the Eagles used in the 2Q attempting to punt turned out to be? They had 10 players on the field, and burned a timeout instead of taking a 5-yard penalty which would not have affected the subsequent punt in the least. Sure enough, as the 2Q would down, the Eagles were in dire need of a timeout to stop the clock and were helpless as the seconds ticked off...
*Michael Vick never got off the sidelines?
*The Eagles Defense again lack of tackling ability?
*Jeremy Maclin's alligator arms late in the 4Q? Quite honestly, I don't blame the kid one bit for looking out for Cowboys Safety Ken Hamlin rather go for what would have been an inconsequential TD.

THE BOTTOM LINE...
This game was as much about the Eagles beating themselves than it was the Cowboys beating them. I am not taking anything away from the Cowboys, especially on defense.

But, the Eagles had their chances and did not take advantage whereas the Cowboys did. I realize that's simplifying things, but...

That's all for now.

As always...

Time's yours. Food's mine.
