Villanova gets love from NCAA selection committee on Selection Sunday as opposed to Temple

Temple and Villanova only had to worry about their seedings on Selection Sunday as Temple (ranked 17th) knocked off Richmond today to win the A-10 Tournament.

Nova on the other hand, struggled down the stretch, but was still ranked 10th in the nation. Villanova entered the season with high expectations after playing in the Final Four for the first time since 1985.  Anything short of that is sure to be a disappointment to Jay Wright and his squad.

The 2010 NCAA Tournament Brackets have been announced on Selection Sunday and Temple and Villanova have interesting roads in the East and South regions respectively.

The selection committee gave Villanova (playing in the South region) a #2 seed and they'll take on Robert Morris on Thursday.  It's a surprise that Nova got a 2nd seed having stumbled as much as they did down the stretch.  They do play in the toughest conference in the NCAA, so that certainly carries a lot of weight.  According to rivals.com, Villanova ranked 11th in RPI.

Temple, who will play in the East region is the 5th seed.  The initial reaction from the CBS crew is that they should've gotten a 3rd or 4th seed.  Added to that, Temple ranked 9th in RPI according to Rivals.com so it's surprising they got just a 5th seed.  They'll play 12th seeded Cornell in the first round on Friday. Look for Temple to coast through the first two rounds and make the Sweet 16 for the first time under head coach Fran Dunphy.  Temple didn't even make it past the first round last year as they were knocked off by Arizona State in the first round, so a Sweet 16 appearance would be a nice step forward for Dunphy's program.

Villanova started out with a 22-2 record this year and had poor momentum heading into the tournament, having lost 5 of their final 7 games entereing the tournament.  Look for them to leave that ugly 7-game stretch behind them and make another run in the tourny.

For Nova the pressure is on to make their 5th Final Four appearance.  For Temple, the Sweet 16 can be considered a success.  Even though 'Nova is the #2 seed and Temple got just a #5 seed you still have to play the games as they say.  Nothing is to say Temple can't make a run at the Elite 8 or further.
