Eagles End Losing Streak, Beat Redskins - The Morning After

"Bookmark

Morning campers,

I don't know about you but I have found it painful, literally, to watch the baseball playoffs after the epic (hey some are tmacalling it that) disappointing end to the Phillies season. I still cannot come to grips with the fact that a team with that starting pitching staff is busy buying their new iPhone instead of making plans to play the Rangers.

But, as we all know, time heals all wounds... it does, right? Hell of course it does, who would know better than a Philly sports fan over the age of 35. And now that the Phillies are done, our collective sports focus falls squarely on the Eagles.

Sorry Flyers, your season goes on longer than Andy Reid's waistline. As for the Union, with all due respect to my man Jesse Lorenz, no one is getting their panties in a bunch over them. And as for the Sixers, well the running joke is 'If a professional sport cancelled an entire season that one really gave a damn about in the first place, would it still make a sound?'

So, like it or not Andy, Joe, & Jeff all eyes are now on you...God help us. And yesterday, MQ and I did our part to break the bad mojo that was surrounding the Eagles by shaking things up. Hey, every little bit helps, right?

So yesterday, instead of being directly to the my right, MQ was situated to my left. But that wasn't all we did to send good karma the Birds' way. Oh no... we also went all Marconi on the bad juju by turning down the sound from the network broadcast and turning up the local radio tandem of Merrill Reese and Mike Quick.

So let's get to getting and I'm in a cinematic mood so I'm gonna channel my inner Lee Van Cleef  - and really, woudn't the world be a much better place if we ALL channeled our inner Lee Van Cleef from time time?

I present you with The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from yesterday's Eagles win over the Redskins... (Note: in keeping with this head scratcher of a season, you'll see some of the same names across multiple categories)

THE GOOD...

*The Eagles Offensive Line - This much-maligned unit opened up quite a few holes for LeSean McCoy  and provided Michael Vick with arguably his best level of protection of the season

*Andy Reid/Marty Squared & the play calling - A great call on the Eagles' 1st TD, the TE screen to Celek; would have received kudos for the McCoy shuffle pass TD had Shady not dropped the ball

*The Eagles Run Defense - Another much-maligned unit held a very good, solid Redskins running attack to 42 net yards rushing; the Eagles' defense as a whole also seemed to play with its most energy and emotion all season

*Kurt Coleman - Yes it was Rex Grossman (more on him later) but 3 picks are still 3 picks and very impressive; KC also showed a lot of aggression, a quality sorely missing from the entire Eagles Defense to date

*LeSean McCoy - Aside from the aforementioned dropped shuffle pass, Shady proved once again that he deserves to be mentioned among the elite running backs in the NFL

*Brent Celek - Well who woke him up? Among the many who inexlicably went AWOL in the 2nd Half, BC had his best game of the season by far

*Nnamdi Asomugha - Maybe ol' Nnamdi is pacing himself. But if you're Chris Cooley, he picked a bad time to start earning all those millions; that was a tremendous, tone-setting hit Nnamdi delevered to the Redskins TE in the 1Q

*The Eagles' Red Zone Defense - Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and no, the Eagles Defense does NOT surrender points EVERY single time the opposition gets in the Red Zone.

THE BAD...

*Evan Mathis - Ok, so he and Jason Kelce are great at picking on sign makers who make grammatically incorrect signs but as for blocking... well at lease Kecle redeemed himself somewhat; Mathis was consistently beaten to the jump by whomever had the good fortune to line up against him

*Andy Reid/Marty Squared & the play calling - Eagles' first offensive play call of the game is a bomb to DeSean Jackson? Really? Remember the play in last week's game when the entire world knew the Bills were not going to run an offensive play and were only trying to draw the Eagles offsides? Yeah well... catch my drift?

*The Eagles' Red Zone Offense - 2 for 5 in the Red Zone including 2 for 4 with goal to go is not going to cut it boys and girls; that is simply pathetic and unfortunately a hallmark of the Andy Reid era

THE UGLY...

*An oppposing TE has his way with the Eagles' Defense - You know when you wake up in the morning and the sun is shining because that's just the way of the world? Well the same holds true for the Eagles' defense and opposing tight ends. Another hallmark of an Andy Reid coached team, this week it was Fred Davis' turn in the TE spotlight dance, catching 6 passes for 95 yards, many with the Eagles' LB Moise Fokou flailing helplessly on the ground 4-5 yards behind him

*The Eagles' Pass Rush - I know Trent Cole didn't play but Jason Babin did, yes? Quick name me one, just one member of the Redskins Offensive Line. Time's up...

*Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - Yes, he made a nice play to break up a TD pass during the game but you notice I didn't give him "Good" props because his minusesagain far outweigh his plusses or plus in this case; he dropped a sure Pick 6 then later was completely embarrassed by Redskins QB John Beck in the open field no less as Beck scrambled for a key first down; it is now time to question DRC's committment to this team; yeah I went there.

*Rex Is Gross, Man - And to think some national "experts" were openly debating if Sexy Rexy was actually a better QB than Michael Vick heading into this game; It is just a little more than glaringly obvious that the Redskins have 3 wins despite Rex Grossman and not because of him

*Vince Young - It's quite a feat when you're considered the worst QB on the field yet you only play for a few seconds but that's precisely what Vince Young was yesterday; Lord almighty what the hell was he thinking with that pass that was intercepted? I know he was hit on the play but... Course Andy & Marty should get some blame too for even calling such a play for a man who has played as much as I have during the regular season

*LeSean McCoy's "punch" to Andy Reid - Following what he thought (more on this in a sec) was a first down run, Eagles RB LeSean McCoy lept to his feet in excitement then proceeded to jab Andy Reid's very large solar plexus; upon witnessing this and the subsequent movement of massive amounts of flesh I of course said to myself (say it with me)... "That has to be jelly 'cause jam don't shake like that."

Will leave you with the wise words of MQ who proclaimed following the game... "We're back baby!"

'Til next time and as always...

Time's yours. Food's mine.
