Phillies sign Scott Podsednik to minor league deal, but he has plantar fasciitis!

First off, let me say I originally loved the Phillies signing veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik to a minor league deal. Podsednik was released by TorontoScott Podsednik photo: www.blogs.suntimes.com last week.

Then I found out that he has plantar fasciitis.

For those of you unfamiliar with the disease, plantar fasciitis mostly involves heel pain.  According to Wikipedia, it has been reported that plantar fasciitis occurs in two million Americans a year and 10% of the population over a lifetime.

For a base stealer like Podsednik, this is almost the equivilant of needing Tommy John Surgery. Podsednik stole 35 bases last year for the Royals and the Dodgers. The Phillies are a team whose bech includes double play machine Wilson Valdez and catcher Brian Schneider. Frankly, I couldn’t think of a worse possible relay team in major league baseball than those two.

The Phillies made this deal because frankly, they are depleted by injuries and right now need anything to spark this floundering offense. Podsednik is a veteran with World Series experience (he hit a walk-off, game-winning homer off Brad Lidge in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series). The downside is that he is 35 and already adding to an aging Phillies team.

Chances are Podsednik will be with the big club sooner than later, but how effective he can be on the base paths is a whole other story.
