Will Mario Williams Be Signed By The Philadelphia Eagles?

As NFL Free Agency gets under way, much of the talk has surrounded where Peyton Manning will end up. However, there is another free agent who many argue is the best of this free agent class.

The number two free agent on the market happens to be Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams, the number one overall pick from the 2006 NFL draft. Remember way back when he was drafted ahead of Reggie Bush and how the Texans were ripped across the board?

Look how that worked out. Mario Williams was a 2-time pro bowler, amassed 53 career sacks and twice recorded double-digit sack seasons. All the while doing this without having a solid number two pass rusher on the other side of the line.

The one knock against Williams will be that his season ended due to a major injury, which will remind people of Jevon Kearse. While it can be argued that the Eagles’ acquisition of Kearse was a mistake; let’s not forget that he played a huge part in the their 2004 Super Bowl run.

Williams would make the Eagles’ defense formidable. Just imagine a defensive end rotation of Mario Williams, Trent Cole, and Jason Babin. It would make offensive coordinators sick. With three Pro Bowl defensive ends in the stable, they would have the most devastating 3-man rotation in football. Apparently it’s not a stretch to think the Eagles will go after Williams, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Eagles are in the mix.

Williams won’t come cheap though, and will probably command a 5-6 year deal worth $15 million per season. However, they would have the best defensive line in football as a result.

With a possible acquisition of a solid linebacker like Atlanta’s Curtis Lofton - this could become one of the elite defenses in the NFL.
