Should the Sixers keep Jahlil Okafor?

A week before the 2015 NBA Draft, I was excited.

The Sixers were going to get better. We already have our big men (Joel Embiid & Nerlens Noel) and a slasher/scorer/sixth man (Tony Wroten). All we needed was another guard; a point guard, who can shoot. The team was expected to draft Ohio State guard and freshman sensation, D'Angelo Russell.

Well, just like they did in 2001, the Lakers stuck it to us, drafting Russell with their second overall pick of the draft last Thursday. The Sixers, drafting third, ended up selecting big man Jahlil Okafor from Duke University. I wanted the team to get a guard (preferably Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay), but they got a big man. And in my eyes, I think we got the better big man.

With their selection of Okafor, the Sixers have now drafted three straight big men in the first round the last three years. However, I am content with this pick. People could look at me strangely for this, but Okafor the has potential to be close to as good as DeMarcus Cousins. The two have similar body frames and shapes, as well as great post moves. I think Okafor has a lot more post moves coming out of college than Cousins did when he came out of Kentucky. People slam Okafor for his defensive skills, but I guess they’ve forgotten that there’s not many good big men in the league. The Sixers have a guy named Nerlens Noel, whose defense is his specialty, although at times he’s capable of putting some points on the board. Not many teams have two good offensive big men, if any at all. Of course, how (or if) Embiid plays remains to be seen.

It’s tough to say how the Sixers are going to use all these big men, but I want to keep them all. Have one come off of the bench. I believe Okafor is going to be an all-star and another beast in this league. He has huge gorilla hands, rhino shins, he’s built like a bodybuilder and even has a beastly voice. In addition, he shows a lot of finesse when he moves to the basket. The Sixers get a B minus for this draft. Okafor was the only spotlight of the night for the team. With all the second round picks the Sixers had, they made no moves and drafted several unknowns who will most likely be playing for their D-League affiliate Delaware 87ers.

I don't know what the Sixers will do in free agency, but from the looks of it, we will have yet another losing season.

That being said, the team is truly on the rise.
